--PART 1--
The mid-afternoon sun, a lazy smear of orange and gold, warmed the river stones. Claire, sixteen, leaned back against the rough bark of an old willow, the paperback novel a familiar weight in her hands. The pages, worn soft from countless readings, smelled of old paper and summer dust. Down by the water's edge, a trio of shrieks and splashes punctuated the quiet. Her cousins, ten-year-old Sully and eight-year-old Emily, along with their neighbour, Oliver, also ten, were engaged in what sounded like an epic battle against an imaginary river monster.
"Watch out, Emily, it's got a tentacle!" Sully's voice, a high-pitched war cry, carried over the gentle current.
A wave of water, deliberately created, crashed near the bank. "I'll get it, Sully! My super-kick!" Emily, a tiny whirlwind of energy, launched herself forward, sending up another spray.
Oliver, more reserved, waded knee-deep, meticulously searching for interesting pebbles, his focus unwavering even amidst the chaos. "Found a good one," he murmured, holding up a smooth, grey stone.
Claire smiled, not looking up from her book. "Don't go too far, you three! Stay where I can see you."
"We won't!" Sully promised, already scrambling onto a half-submerged log, water streaming from his swim trunks. "This is the monster's lair!"
The novel, a fantasy epic, pulled her deeper into its world of ancient magic and forgotten kingdoms. The river's murmur, the children's distant shouts, all faded into a comfortable background hum. A shadow fell across her page. She glanced up, blinking against the sun. Two figures stood silhouetted against the bright sky, their faces obscured. Recognition, slow and unwelcome, prickled her skin.
"Claire? Is that you?" The voice, sweet and lilting, belonged to Chloe.
Beside her, Ashley offered a wide, almost too-bright smile. "We thought it was you! What a surprise, running into you here."
Claire's grip tightened on her book. "Hey, Chloe. Ashley." She managed a thin smile, a flicker of unease already stirring. Chloe and Ashley, from her history class, were the kind of girls who moved in a shimmering, exclusive bubble, occasionally deigning to acknowledge lesser mortals. Their sudden appearance here, at her quiet river spot, felt less like a coincidence and more like an intrusion.
"Just relaxing with a book?" Chloe's gaze swept over the paperback, then to the children splashing in the water. Her smile didn't quite reach her eyes. "Looks... peaceful."
"It is," Claire replied, her voice flat. She closed the book, placing it carefully beside her on the blanket.
Ashley sauntered closer, her eyes, sharp and assessing, raking over Claire's simple t-shirt and denim shorts. "Who are your little friends? They're having a blast."
"My cousins, Sully and Emily. And Oliver, our neighbour." Claire gestured vaguely towards the water. The kids, sensing new arrivals, had paused their monster hunt, now watching the two older girls with wide, curious eyes.
"They look like they're having so much fun," Chloe cooed, her tone dripping with an artificial sweetness that grated on Claire's nerves. "Don't you want to join them, Claire? It's a perfect day for a swim."
"I'm good here," Claire said, crossing her arms. A faint breeze rustled the willow leaves above, a whisper of warning.
"Oh, come on," Ashley urged, nudging Chloe with her elbow. "It's practically boiling out. A dip would be amazing." She lowered her voice conspiratorially, though Claire heard every word. "Look at them, they're practically begging for you to join in. Don't be such a spoilsport."
Sully, having overheard, piped up, "Yeah, Claire! Come in! The monster's getting bigger!"
Emily, ever eager, bounced on the balls of her feet. "Please, Claire? It'll be super fun!"
Oliver, usually quiet, even offered a small, hopeful nod.
Claire felt a familiar tug of obligation, mixed with a growing sense of dread. These two girls, Chloe and Ashley, had a way of turning everything into a game, often at someone else's expense. She knew their type. "Maybe later," she hedged, trying to dismiss the insistent pressure. "And I don't have a costume."
Chloe took a step towards the water, her eyes fixed on the children. "You know, it's a shame Claire's so shy. She'd probably love to splash around with you guys, but she's just too... reserved." Her voice, though soft, carried a distinct edge.
Ashley chimed in, her voice louder, a clear invitation. "Unless... you guys could convince her? It would be hilarious! I bet she'd be a lot more fun once she's in the water."
Sully's eyes, already bright with mischief, widened further. Emily giggled, a tiny spark igniting in her gaze. Oliver, still holding his pebble, seemed to consider the suggestion, a slow smile spreading across his face.
"Convince me?" Claire repeated, a nervous laugh escaping her lips. "How exactly do you plan on doing that?" The hairs on her arms stood on end. This wasn't a friendly suggestion. This was a challenge, a dare, and she was the unwitting target.
Chloe's smile widened, a predatory gleam in her eyes. "Oh, I think they know. Don't you, little ones?" She glanced meaningfully at Sully, then at Emily.
Sully, ever the leader, seemed to understand immediately. "You mean... like a surprise swim?" He exchanged a quick, excited look with Emily.
"Exactly!" Ashley clapped her hands together, a sound sharp and sudden in the afternoon quiet. "A surprise swim for Claire!"
