Chapter 1: The Naked Trap

The water shut off with a squeak of old pipes, and suddenly the locker room was way too quiet.

Chloe stood under the showerhead for a second longer, letting the last drops run down her back. Her muscles ached---two hours of sprint drills and then those brutal 400-meter repeats Coach made them run at the end, and her legs were shaking by the time she finished. Her calves were on fire. Her quads felt like someone had beaten them with a hammer.

She wrung out her hair, twisted it until the water stopped dripping, and stepped out onto the cold tile. The steam was already thinning. All the other shower stalls were empty---Maya and Sarah had finished first, then Jenna, their voices bouncing off the walls and then fading as the heavy door swung shut behind them.

God, finally. Peace and quiet.

She walked to her locker, number 17, leaving wet footprints on the floor. Her skin was still pink from the hot water, little goosebumps starting to prickle up on her arms now that the steam was gone. She spun the combination---17-24-6---and pulled the metal door open.

Nothing.

She blinked. Looked again.

Empty. Completely empty. No jeans. No sweatshirt. No bra, no underwear, no sneakers. Her gym bag was gone. Her backpack with her phone and keys and everything---gone. The shelf where she always put her stuff was just bare metal, except for a folded piece of notebook paper.

Chloe's stomach did this weird flip thing. She grabbed the note, her wet fingers smudging the ink:

Got your stuff! Come find me in the parking lot. Don't keep me waiting! --- J

Jenna.

Oh my god. Oh my god, she didn't.

Chloe laughed---this shaky, nervous sound that echoed off the lockers. A prank. Jenna and her stupid pranks. Last month she'd put a fake spider in Maya's gym bag and Maya had screamed so loud the boys' basketball coach came running from the other side of the gym. This was just... this was worse. This was way worse.

She checked the other lockers anyway. Maybe Jenna had moved her stuff. Maybe this was just the first part of the joke and her clothes were in locker 18, or 16, or---

Nothing. All the lockers were empty or locked. She checked the hooks by the showers. Nothing. Under the benches. Nothing. The whole locker room was just... nothing.

Okay. Think. What do I do?

She could wait. Just sit here on the bench until someone came looking for her. But it was Friday night, after six, and the school was basically empty. Nobody was coming. Her parents expected her home by seven-thirty, and if she wasn't there her mom would call, and when she didn't answer---

Shit. My phone. My phone is in my backpack. Which Jenna has.

She could yell for help. But then someone would find her like this---naked, wet, standing in an empty locker room---and she'd have to explain, and the explanation was "my friend stole all my clothes as a joke," which sounded insane. Or she could go find Jenna. The parking lot wasn't that far. Out the side door, across the bus lane, and she'd be there. The school was empty. It was Friday night. Nobody was here.

Just go. Just go fast and get your clothes and then kill Jenna. Simple.

She pushed the locker room door open and stepped into the corridor.

The hallway was dim---every other light was off, this stupid energy-saving thing the school did after hours. Pools of yellow light and then long stretches of shadow. The floor was that weird speckled linoleum they put in every school everywhere, cold under her bare feet. Somewhere a heater was humming, this low drone that made the silence feel even bigger.

Chloe wrapped her left arm across her chest and pressed her right hand between her legs. It didn't really cover anything---her boobs squished up over her forearm, and her hand barely hid anything down there---but she couldn't just... walk. Not like this. Not with everything just... out.

God, I hate this. I hate her. I'm going to kill her.

She walked fast. Past the gym, the double doors dark and the basketball hoops folded up against the ceiling. Past the science wing---she could smell that weird chemical smell from the chem lab, like vinegar and something else. Her feet made these soft slapping sounds on the floor, way too loud in the quiet.

The side door was ahead, the one that led out to the bus lane. Red EXIT sign glowing above it. She pushed the bar and stepped outside.

The air hit her like a wall. Cold. Way colder than she'd expected. The sun was going down, painting the sky in streaks of orange and pink, and the temperature had dropped with it. Goosebumps erupted all over her body---her arms, her thighs, her stomach. Her nipples tightened painfully, and she could feel them puckering against her forearm.

Shit. It's freezing. Where is she?

The parking lot stretched out in front of her, mostly empty. A few cars still scattered around---teachers working late, maybe, or janitorial staff. The streetlights were just starting to flicker on, casting pools of yellow light on the asphalt. No sign of Jenna.

Chloe stepped off the concrete and onto the asphalt. It was rough under her bare feet, cold and gritty. Little pebbles dug into her soles. She kept her left arm clamped across her chest and her right hand pressed between her legs, hunching forward, trying to be as small as possible.

"Jenna?" Her voice came out as a whisper. Too quiet. She tried again. "Jenna! This isn't funny anymore!"

Nothing. Just the wind and the distant sound of traffic on the main road.

Where is she? She said the parking lot. Did she leave? Did she take my stuff and just---

"Hey!"

The voice came from behind her. Loud. Sharp. Not Jenna.

Chloe spun around. Mr. Hannigan---the security guard, the one with the gray mustache who always yelled at kids for running in the halls---was standing at the side door she'd just come through. His flashlight beam cut across the asphalt and swept up her body, catching her chest, her stomach, her legs before he jerked it away like he'd been burned.

"What in the---" His face went bright red. He stared at the sky, the ground, the wall, anywhere but at her. "Miss Bennett? Is that---what are you doing out here?"

"I---" Her voice came out as this tiny croak. She was still holding herself, arms clamped tight, and the flashlight had felt like---like something physical. Like he'd touched her. "I was just---"

"Stay right there." He was fumbling with the radio on his belt, his hands shaking. "Don't move. I'm calling this in."

Calling this in? Calling who? The principal? Oh god, the principal is going to see me like this---

He raised the radio to his mouth. "Dispatch, this is Hannigan at the high school. I've got a situation here. Female student, completely naked, in the parking lot. Looks like streaking. I need police assistance."

Police. He called the police.

Chloe's legs went weak. The word echoed in her head---police, police, police---and suddenly the cold didn't matter anymore. The rough asphalt under her feet didn't matter. Nothing mattered except the fact that the police were coming and she was standing in the school parking lot completely naked and she had no idea what was going to happen to her.

"Mr. Hannigan, please---" She took a step toward him, and he took a step back, his hand going up like she was a wild animal.

"Stay where you are, Miss Bennett. Don't come any closer."

She stopped. The asphalt was cold under her feet. The wind was cold on her bare skin. She was shaking---from the cold, from the fear, from everything. Her teeth were starting to chatter.

He walked toward her, his steps slow and cautious. "I need you to stay right here. The police will be here in a few minutes."

"The police---" Her voice cracked. "Why did you call the police?"

"You're outside, on school property, completely undressed. That's a violation of school policy and---" He paused, his jaw tight. "And possibly more than that. I don't have a choice."

He reached out and took her arm---not hard, but firm, his fingers wrapping around her bicep. His hand was warm against her cold skin, and the contact made her flinch.

"Just stay here. Don't try to run."

Run? Where would I run? I'm naked. I don't have shoes. I don't have anything.

She stood there in the parking lot, the security guard's hand on her arm, the wind cutting through her like knives. Her hair blew across her face, across her shoulders. Her nipples were so tight they ached. She could feel every pair of eyes that might be watching from the dark windows of the houses across the street.

This isn't happening. This isn't real. I'm going to wake up in my bed and this is all going to be a nightmare.

But she didn't wake up. The cold was real. The rough asphalt under her feet was real. The security guard's grip on her arm was very, very real.

* * *

The police arrived six minutes later. Chloe knew it was six minutes because she counted every single second, watching the red digits on Mr. Hannigan's watch, trying not to think about what was going to happen when the police actually got here.

The sirens came first---distant, then louder, then right there. Red and blue lights flashed across the parking lot, painting the asphalt in alternating colors. A patrol car pulled up and stopped. Car doors slammed. Footsteps.

Two police officers walked toward them. One was a woman---tall, with dark hair pulled back in a tight bun, her uniform crisp and professional. The other was a man, older, with a graying mustache and a belly that strained against his belt. They both stopped when they got close enough to see Chloe clearly.

The woman's expression flickered---surprise, then something harder, more clinical. The man just stared, his mouth slightly open, before catching himself and looking away.

"I'm Officer Reeves," the woman said, her voice neutral. "This is Officer Kowalski. Mr. Hannigan, you called in a public indecency report?"

"Yes, ma'am." Mr. Hannigan straightened up, though he didn't let go of Chloe's arm. "I found her out here in the parking lot. Completely undressed. No clothes, no towel, nothing. She came out the side door by the gym."

Officer Reeves turned to Chloe. Her eyes swept over her---the arms clamped across her chest, the hunched shoulders, the bare legs pressed together, the dark hair visible above her fingers---and her expression didn't change.

"What's your name?"

"Chloe. Chloe Bennett." Her voice was barely a whisper.

"Chloe. Can you tell me why you're outside your school on a Friday evening with no clothes on?"

"I---" Chloe's throat was so tight she could barely breathe. Her mind was racing, scrambling for something to say, something that would make this okay. But there was nothing. She couldn't tell them about Jenna. She couldn't tell them it was a prank. That would just make everything worse---then she'd be the girl who was stupid enough to walk outside naked because of a joke. "I was just---I was trying to---"

She couldn't finish. The words wouldn't come.

Officer Reeves waited. When Chloe didn't continue, she exchanged a look with Officer Kowalski.

"Chloe," she said, her voice still calm but firmer now, "I need you to understand the situation you're in. You are outside, on school property, completely undressed. That falls under public indecency. In this state, that's a Class B misdemeanor."

"What---" Chloe's voice cracked. "What does that mean?"

"It means it's a criminal offense. At your age, it would go through juvenile court, but the consequences are still serious. We're talking about mandatory community service, mandatory counseling, a permanent mark on your record. And that's not even counting what the school will do."

Criminal offense. Juvenile court. Permanent record. Oh god oh god oh god---

"And if the school pursues their own disciplinary action," Officer Kowalski added, his voice gruff, "you could be looking at expulsion. The district has a zero-tolerance policy on this kind of thing."

Mr. Hannigan nodded. "Last year a senior streaked across the football field on a dare. Expelled. And that was just the football field, not the parking lot where anyone driving by could see."

Chloe couldn't breathe. The world was tilting, spinning, the red and blue lights blurring together. Criminal record. Expulsion. My life is over. My life is actually over. I'm sixteen and my life is over and I'm standing in a parking lot naked and everyone is looking at me and---

"I didn't---" she started, but her voice was shaking so hard she could barely get the words out. "I didn't know---I wasn't trying to---"

"Chloe!"

The voice came from across the parking lot. Running footsteps. Jenna.

She came sprinting around the corner of the building, her blonde ponytail flying behind her, her face pale and panicked. She was still in her practice shorts and tank top. Her hands were empty.

No clothes. She doesn't have my clothes. Where are my clothes?

Jenna skidded to a stop a few feet away, her eyes going wide as she took in the scene---the police officers, the flashing lights, Chloe standing naked in the parking lot with the security guard's hand on her arm.

"Oh my god," she breathed. "Oh my god, Chloe---"

"Miss." Officer Reeves held up a hand. "Who are you?"

"Jenna Cole. I'm Chloe's friend. I was---" She looked at Chloe, and something passed between them. Something quick and desperate. "I was waiting for her. She was supposed to meet me."

"You were waiting for her?" Officer Reeves's eyebrows went up. "You knew she was out here? Undressed?"

Jenna took a deep breath. Her expression shifted---the panic fading, replaced by something steadier. Something almost rehearsed.

"Chloe's a nudist," she said. "It's her religion."

Everyone went still.

Officer Reeves blinked. "Excuse me?"

"Chloe's a nudist. A naturist. It's a religious practice." Jenna's voice was calm now, confident, like she was giving a class presentation. "She's been exploring it for months. The Church of Natural Being. They believe the human body is a divine creation and that covering it is a rejection of that divinity. It's a legitimate religious organization protected under the First Amendment."

Chloe stared at her. What is she doing? What is she talking about?

"That's---" Officer Kowalski sputtered. "That's ridiculous. She was streaking---"

"She wasn't streaking. She was practicing her faith." Jenna pulled out her phone, her fingers flying across the screen. "Look. Here's their website. Here's their statement of beliefs. Here's a news article about a case in Oregon---a high school student sued her school district for religious discrimination after they tried to force her to wear clothes. She won. Millions of dollars in damages. The school had to change their entire dress code policy."

Officer Reeves took the phone and scrolled through it, her frown deepening. Officer Kowalski leaned over to look too.

"I remember that case," Officer Reeves said slowly. "It was a mess. The city ended up settling too."

"Exactly." Jenna's voice was triumphant. "Religious freedom laws protect sincerely held beliefs. If you arrest Chloe, or if the school expels her, you're opening yourself up to a massive lawsuit."

The parking lot went quiet. The red and blue lights kept flashing. The wind kept blowing. Chloe stood there, naked, shaking, her mind reeling, while Jenna talked about churches and lawsuits and religious freedom like any of this made sense.

What is she doing? This is insane. This is completely insane. But they're actually listening.

Officer Reeves looked at Chloe. "Is this true? Is this your religious belief?"

Chloe opened her mouth. Jenna caught her eye and gave the tiniest nod.

Say yes. You have to say yes. If you say no, you get arrested. You get expelled. Your life is over. Say yes.

"Yes." Her voice came out as a whisper. "It's my faith."

Officer Reeves sighed. She handed the phone back to Jenna. "All right. We're not going to sort this out in a parking lot. Is there somewhere we can go inside?"

Mr. Hannigan nodded. "Principal's office. I'll call Principal Morrison."

* * *

The principal arrived twelve minutes later.

By then, they had moved inside. Chloe was sitting in one of the plastic chairs in the front office, still naked, still shaking, her arms wrapped around herself. Jenna stood next to her, one hand on her shoulder. Officer Reeves stood by the door. Officer Kowalski had gone back outside to wait in the patrol car. Mr. Hannigan was making coffee in the break room, probably just to have something to do with his hands.

Principal Morrison walked in still wearing her weekend clothes---jeans and a blouse, her gray hair pulled back in a hurry. She looked like she'd been pulled away from dinner. Which she probably had.

"What in God's name is going on here?"

Mr. Hannigan stepped forward. "I found Miss Bennett outside in the parking lot, completely undressed. I called the police. Officer Reeves responded."

Principal Morrison turned to Officer Reeves. "And?"

Officer Reeves straightened up. "Under normal circumstances, this would be a clear case of public indecency. Class B misdemeanor. Juvenile court, community service, the works. Combined with the school's zero-tolerance policy, she'd be looking at expulsion on top of criminal charges."

Principal Morrison's face hardened. She turned to Chloe. "Then that's what will happen. I won't tolerate this kind of behavior at my school. Streaking through the parking lot---"

"She wasn't streaking."

Everyone turned. Jenna's voice was steady, but her hand on Chloe's shoulder was trembling slightly.

"Excuse me?" Principal Morrison's eyes narrowed.

"Chloe wasn't streaking. She was practicing her religious faith. She's a nudist. A naturist. The Church of Natural Being."

Principal Morrison stared at her. "That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard."

"It's not ridiculous. It's a legitimate religious organization." Jenna pulled out her phone again, the website already loaded. "They believe the human body is sacred and shouldn't be covered. Chloe's been practicing for months. She was just too shy to tell anyone."

"And I'm supposed to believe that she just happened to be practicing her faith in the school parking lot on a Friday evening?"

"She was meeting me. I'm her... I guess you could call me her support person. We were going to talk about how to tell her parents."

Principal Morrison took the phone and scrolled through it. Her expression didn't change. "Even if this is a real organization, that doesn't give a student the right to walk around school property naked."

"Actually," Jenna said, "it does. There's a case in Oregon---a high school student sued her school district for religious discrimination. She won. Millions of dollars. The school had to change their entire dress code. And the city had to settle too, after the family threatened to sue them for violating her civil rights."

"I remember that case," Officer Reeves said quietly. "It was all over the news. The school district's insurance premiums went through the roof."

Principal Morrison looked at Officer Reeves. Then at Jenna. Then at Chloe. Her jaw was tight.

"This is absurd," she said. "She was streaking. We all know she was streaking."

"Can you prove that?" Jenna's voice was challenging now. "Can you prove, beyond any doubt, that her religious belief isn't sincere? Because if you can't, and you expel her anyway, you're looking at a discrimination lawsuit that could cost the district millions. And that's not even counting what the city would face if you press criminal charges."

The room went quiet. Principal Morrison stared at Jenna's phone. Officer Reeves stared at the ceiling. Chloe stared at her own knees, her heart pounding, her mind racing.

This is working. This is actually working. They're scared. They're scared of getting sued.

"This is---" Principal Morrison started, then stopped. She looked at Officer Reeves. "Is she right? Can they actually do this?"

Officer Reeves sighed. "Unfortunately, yes. If the religious claim is sincere, the courts have consistently ruled in favor of religious freedom. Even when it makes everyone uncomfortable. Even when it seems..." She paused, searching for the right word. "...convenient."

"It's not convenient," Jenna said, her voice full of righteous indignation. "It's her faith. She shouldn't be punished for her faith."

Principal Morrison looked at Chloe. Her eyes were sharp, assessing. "Chloe. Is this true? Is this your sincerely held religious belief?"

Chloe looked up. At the principal. At the police officer. At Jenna, who was still holding her shoulder, still standing beside her like a shield.

Say yes. You have to say yes. If you say no, everything falls apart. Expulsion. Criminal record. Your life is over. Say yes.

"Yes." Her voice came out stronger this time. "It's my faith."

Principal Morrison leaned back against her desk. She looked tired. She looked like she was doing mental math---lawsuits, school board meetings, angry parents, the local news.

"I'm going to need to consult with the district's legal team before we make any decisions," she said finally. "And the city's legal team as well, if criminal charges are potentially off the table."

Officer Reeves nodded. "I'll include all of this in my report. Given the religious claim and the legal precedent, I don't think charges are appropriate at this time. But I'd advise everyone to be very careful about how this is handled going forward." She looked at Chloe. "If this turns out to be a fabrication, the consequences will be severe. For everyone involved."

"I understand," Jenna said quickly. "We understand. Thank you."

Principal Morrison straightened up. "In the meantime, I need to call your parents, Chloe."

No. Please no. Anyone but my mom.

But she nodded. What else could she do?

* * *

Her parents arrived at nine.

Chloe heard her mother's heels before she saw her---that sharp click-click-click on the linoleum, getting louder, faster. The sound made her stomach clench. She'd heard that sound a thousand times, coming down the hallway at home when she was in trouble, and her body knew what it meant before her brain did.

Victoria Bennett walked through the office door like she was entering a courtroom. She was still in her work clothes---a dark blazer, a silk blouse, tailored pants. Her hair was perfect. Her makeup was perfect. Her expression was completely blank.

David followed behind her, his tie loosened, his hair a little messy, looking like he'd been pulled off the couch. He was still wearing his house slippers.

"What happened." Not a question. Her mother never asked questions. She demanded answers.

Principal Morrison stood up. Officer Reeves was still there, standing by the door. Jenna was still next to Chloe, her hand on her shoulder.

"Mr. and Mrs. Bennett. Thank you for coming so quickly. There's been an... incident." Principal Morrison's voice was careful, measured, the kind of voice principals used when they were trying not to get sued. "Your daughter was found outside the school this evening, completely undressed. The security guard called the police. Under normal circumstances, she would be facing expulsion and criminal charges for public indecency."

Victoria's eyes moved to Chloe---a slow, deliberate scan from her face down to her feet and back up. Her expression didn't change, but something flickered behind her eyes. Something cold.

"However," Principal Morrison continued, "Chloe and her friend Jenna have explained that this was not streaking or indecent exposure. They claim it was an expression of religious faith. Naturism. The Church of Natural Being."

"Religious faith." Victoria's voice was flat. "My daughter has never mentioned any religious faith."

"It's something she's been exploring privately," Jenna jumped in. "She was nervous about telling you. A lot of naturists face discrimination from their families. She was afraid of how you'd react."

Victoria looked at Jenna for a long moment. Her expression was unreadable. "I see."

"Mrs. Bennett," Officer Reeves spoke up, "I want to be clear about the situation. If your daughter's religious claim is legitimate, she's protected under the First Amendment. The school can't expel her, and we can't charge her. There's legal precedent---a case in Oregon where a school district had to pay millions in damages. But if the claim isn't legitimate..." She let the sentence hang.

"If the claim isn't legitimate," Victoria finished, "then my daughter was streaking through her school, committing a criminal act, and lying to cover it up."

"Yes, ma'am."

Victoria turned to Chloe. Her eyes were cold. "Chloe. Is this true? Is this your sincerely held religious belief?"

Chloe looked at her mother. At her father, who was studying the floor tiles like they contained the secrets of the universe. At Jenna, who gave her this tiny encouraging nod. At Officer Reeves, who was watching her with sharp, skeptical eyes.

"Yes."

Victoria held her gaze for three seconds. Four. Five. Her eyes never wavered. Then she turned back to Principal Morrison.

"Our family respects religious freedom. If this is Chloe's sincerely held belief, we will honor it."

The way she said sincerely---just the slightest pause before it, the barest emphasis---made Chloe's stomach drop.

She knows. She definitely knows.

Principal Morrison looked relieved. "I appreciate that, Mrs. Bennett. Given the legal complexities, I think the best course of action is for Chloe to go home tonight. I'll consult with the district's legal team and the city's legal team over the weekend. We'll be in touch about how to proceed. There may be... formal accommodations that need to be made. A contract, perhaps, to protect all parties involved."

"A contract?" Victoria's eyebrow went up.

"To ensure that everyone's rights are protected. The school's, the city's, and Chloe's. If her religious practice is genuine, we want to make sure she can practice it without interference. But we also need to protect ourselves from liability. I'll have more details after I speak with the lawyers."

"Of course." Victoria's voice was smooth as glass. "We'll await your call."

Officer Reeves said her goodbyes and left. The patrol car pulled away, the red and blue lights fading into the night.

Principal Morrison stood up. "Chloe, you're free to go home. We'll be in touch over the weekend---possibly as soon as Sunday, if the legal team moves quickly. In the meantime..." She paused, clearly struggling with what to say. "In the meantime, I suppose you can... continue practicing your faith as you see fit."

"Thank you," Jenna said, her voice warm and grateful. "Thank you so much for understanding."

* * *

The walk to the car was maybe a hundred feet. It felt like a hundred miles.

The parking lot was mostly empty now---just Principal Morrison's sedan, her dad's SUV under one of the streetlights, and a few other cars scattered around. The asphalt was cold and rough under Chloe's bare feet, little pebbles digging into her soles. The air had gotten even colder, and the wind picked up as soon as they stepped outside, raising goosebumps all over her body. Her nipples tightened painfully, and she could feel the hair on her arms standing up.

She wrapped her arms around herself, hunching forward, trying to cover what she could. Her hair had mostly dried by now, but the wind caught it and blew it across her face, across her shoulders, doing nothing to hide anything.

Please don't let anyone see me. Please. It's dark. It's late. Nobody's out. Nobody's watching.

But she couldn't stop scanning the parking lot, the street beyond, the dark windows of the houses across the road. Anyone could be looking. Anyone could see her---a naked sixteen-year-old girl walking across a school parking lot at nine o'clock on a Friday night.

Her father walked ahead, his head down, his hands in his pockets. He still hadn't looked at her. Her mother walked behind her---Chloe could hear her heels clicking on the asphalt, steady and unhurried. She felt her mother's eyes on her back, on her bare butt, on the backs of her thighs, and she wanted to run. She wanted to sprint to the car and throw herself inside and disappear.

But she walked. One foot in front of the other. Pebbles digging into her soles. Wind biting at her skin. The streetlight making everything too bright, too visible.

Almost there. Almost there. Just get in the car. Just get in the car.

Her father unlocked the SUV. The beep of the remote was way too loud in the quiet night. Chloe opened the back door and climbed in, and the leather seat was freezing against her bare thighs and butt. She slid across to the far side, as far from the door as she could get, and pulled her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them.

Small. Make yourself small. Maybe if you're small enough, none of this is happening.

Her father got in the driver's seat. Her mother got in the passenger seat. The doors closed---thud, thud---and then it was just the three of them, sealed in this bubble of silence and leather and the faint smell of her dad's coffee.

The engine started. The heater kicked on, blowing cold air at first. Chloe shivered.

Nobody spoke.

Her father pulled out of the parking lot. The streetlights slid across the windows---yellow, dark, yellow, dark. Chloe watched them and tried not to think. Tried not to feel the seat under her bare skin or the cold air from the vent hitting her nipples or the way her mother kept glancing at her in the rearview mirror.

She's going to yell at me. She's going to ask questions. She's going to---

But her mother didn't say anything. Nobody said anything. The silence was worse than yelling. At least if she yelled, Chloe would know what she was thinking.

The drive took fifteen minutes. Chloe counted the streetlights. She counted the stop signs. She counted the turns. Anything to keep her brain busy, to keep it from spiraling into the panic that was waiting for her at the edges of her thoughts.

I'll explain when we get home. I'll tell Mom what really happened. She'll understand. She has to. She's my mom. She'll be mad, but she'll help me figure this out. Maybe I can just... maybe I can just tell the school I was confused, or it was a misunderstanding, or---

When they turned onto their street, her heart started pounding harder. Their house was the third one on the right---a two-story colonial with white siding and black shutters and a big oak tree in the front yard. The porch light was on. The living room light was on. Ethan was probably in there, playing video games or watching TV or whatever he did on Friday nights.

Ethan. Oh god. Ethan is going to see me. My brother is going to see me naked.

Her father pulled into the driveway. The garage door opened with its usual grinding rumble, and he pulled inside. The door closed behind them, sealing them in.

Chloe didn't move. She stayed curled up in the back seat, her knees against her chest, her arms wrapped tight around her legs.

"Chloe." Her mother's voice was sharp. "Get out of the car."

She unfolded herself slowly. Her skin made that awful squeaking sound against the leather. She opened the door and stepped out onto the cold concrete of the garage floor.

The garage was cluttered with the usual stuff---her dad's workbench, the lawn mower, boxes of Christmas decorations, Ethan's bike. The door to the house was ten feet away. Ten feet of cold concrete and then she'd be inside, and Ethan might be right there, and---

Stop. Just stop thinking. Just walk.

She walked. Her father was already at the door, his hand on the knob, his back to her. Her mother was behind her again, those heels clicking on the concrete. Chloe could feel her eyes on her body, and she wanted to scream.

The door opened. Warm air rushed out, smelling like whatever her dad had made for dinner---pasta, maybe, or something with garlic. The kitchen was empty. The living room beyond was empty too, though the TV was on, some action movie playing to nobody.

Where's Ethan? Upstairs? Please be upstairs. Please don't come down.

"David." Victoria's voice was calm. Controlled. "Make some coffee."

Her father nodded, still not looking at Chloe, and disappeared into the kitchen. The coffee maker started gurgling.

Victoria turned to Chloe. "My room. Now."

* * *

Chloe followed her mother up the stairs. The carpet was soft under her bare feet, familiar, but everything felt wrong. The family photos on the wall---Chloe at eight, missing her front teeth. Chloe at twelve, holding her track trophy. Chloe at fifteen, in her homecoming dress, smiling at the camera. All those versions of her, and now here she was, naked, climbing the stairs to her parents' bedroom like a prisoner walking to her cell.

Her parents' bedroom was at the end of the hall---neat, organized, everything in its place. The bed was made. The curtains were drawn. Her mother's jewelry box sat on the dresser, perfectly aligned with the mirror.

Victoria closed the door behind them.

"Sit."

Chloe sat on the edge of the bed. The comforter was cool under her thighs. She wrapped her arms around herself, hunching forward, trying to cover what she could. Her breasts pressed against her forearms, and she could feel her nipples---hard from the cold, from the fear---against her own skin.

We're alone now. Just us. I can tell her. I can explain everything.

"Mom---"

"Stop." Victoria held up one hand. She didn't sit. She stood in front of Chloe, looking down at her, her arms crossed. "I'm going to ask you one question, and you are going to tell me the truth. Not the story you told the principal and the police officer. The truth."

Chloe's heart was pounding so hard she could feel it in her ears.

"Were you streaking?"

"No! Mom, I wasn't---Jenna took my clothes. It was a prank. She hid everything and I didn't have a towel or anything and I was just trying to get to the parking lot to find my stuff---"

"So you were running through the school and into the parking lot naked."

"I wasn't running, I was just---" Chloe's voice cracked. "I was trying to be quick. I thought nobody was there."

Victoria's expression didn't change. "And the religious naturism?"

Chloe looked down at her lap. At her hands, still folded, still trying to hide what they couldn't hide. "Jenna told me to say it. She said it was the only way. She said if I didn't, I'd be expelled and arrested and---"

"So you lied."

The words hit her like a slap.

"I---" Chloe's eyes burned. She blinked hard. "Yes. I lied. I was scared, Mom. I was so scared. The police were there. They were talking about criminal charges. What was I supposed to do?"

Victoria was quiet for a long moment. When she spoke, her voice was calm. Too calm.

"You were supposed to tell the truth and accept the consequences of your actions."

"Mom, please." Chloe looked up at her, and the tears were coming now, hot and fast, spilling down her cheeks. "Please. I know I messed up. I know. But I can't go to school like this. I'll figure something out---maybe I can tell them it was a misunderstanding, or that I was confused, or---"

"No."

Chloe stopped. "What?"

"You will not tell them anything." Victoria's voice was still calm, still measured, but there was something hard underneath it now. Something like steel. "You lied, Chloe. You stood in front of your principal and a police officer and you lied to both of them. You invented a religious faith to escape the consequences of your own foolishness. You committed an offense---public indecency, streaking through your school---and instead of owning up to it, you fabricated an elaborate deception. That is not a small thing."

"I know, but---"

"You will live the lie you told."

Chloe stared at her. "What?"

"You told the school you were a nudist. You told them it was your sincerely held religious belief. So that is what you will be." Victoria's eyes were cold, unblinking. "You have two choices. You can go to the school on Monday morning and tell them the truth---that you lied about your religious beliefs, that you were streaking through the halls and into the parking lot, and that you manipulated them all to escape punishment. You can accept the expulsion and whatever legal consequences follow. Including, I assume, the criminal charges Officer Reeves mentioned."

Chloe's blood went cold.

"Or," Victoria continued, "you can live the lie you told. You can be the nudist you claimed to be. Every day. At school. At home. In public. Everywhere. Until you are ready to tell the truth yourself."

"That's not a choice! That's---"

"It is the only choice I am giving you." Victoria's voice was final. "When you are ready to confess what you did---to the school, to the principal, to everyone---this ends. Until then, you will live exactly as you claimed you wanted to live. Completely naked. Without complaint. Without covering yourself. Without shame."

Chloe was shaking. Her whole body was trembling, and she couldn't stop it. "Mom, please. Please. I can't do this. I can't."

"You can. You will." Victoria walked to the door and opened it. "Come with me."

Chloe followed her mother down the hall to her own bedroom. Her legs felt like they were made of water. Her room was the same as always---pink walls, the track trophy on her dresser, the stack of textbooks on her desk, her bed with the purple comforter. Everything was the same. Everything was about to change.

Victoria walked to the closet and pulled it open. She began taking Chloe's clothes off the hangers---her sweaters, her dresses, her favorite jeans, the blue ones that made her butt look good---and dropping them onto the bed.

"Mom, stop---"

Victoria pulled open the dresser drawers. Underwear. Socks. Bras. The lacy bra Chloe had bought at the mall with her own money, the one she'd never even worn because it was too fancy for school. All of it went onto the growing pile on the bed.

"You can't do this!" Chloe stood in the doorway, her voice rising. "Those are mine!"

"I can. I am." Victoria's hands didn't stop moving. "You made a declaration tonight. A religious conviction. I am simply ensuring that conviction is honored in this household."

"That's not fair! I told you the truth! I told you it was a lie!"

"Yes. You did." Victoria paused, a handful of Chloe's socks in her hand. "And now you have two choices. Confess to the school on Monday, or live as the nudist you claimed to be. Those are your options."

She gathered the pile of clothes into her arms---jeans and sweaters and underwear and bras, everything Chloe owned, everything she'd ever worn---and walked out of the room.

Chloe followed her down the stairs, her bare feet slapping on the wood. "Mom, please---Mom, you can't just---"

Victoria didn't stop. She walked through the kitchen, past David who was standing by the coffee maker with a mug in his hand, his face pale and frozen. She walked to the front door and opened it.

"Victoria---" David started.

"Stay out of this." Victoria didn't even look at him.

She stepped outside. The porch light cast a yellow glow across the front yard. The night air was cold, biting. Chloe stopped in the doorway, her arms wrapped around herself, watching as her mother walked down the front steps and across the lawn to the big green trash bin at the curb.

The lid squeaked open. Victoria lifted the bundle of clothes---Chloe's whole wardrobe, her whole life---and dropped it inside. The clothes landed with a soft thump. The lid squeaked shut.

She threw them away. She actually threw them away. They're gone. Everything is gone.

Victoria walked back up the steps, her heels clicking on the concrete. She paused in the doorway, her eyes meeting Chloe's. Her expression was still blank, but her voice was quiet and sharp as a blade.

"And don't even think about pulling them out of the bin. The garbage truck comes at six tomorrow morning. They'll be gone before you wake up."

She stepped past Chloe and went inside.

Chloe stood there for a moment, one hand on the doorframe, staring at the trash bin at the curb. The cold air raised goosebumps all over her body. Her nipples were hard and aching. The wind blew her hair across her face.

Gone. Everything is gone. And tomorrow morning the truck will come and take them away and there won't be anything left. Nothing. Not even a sock. Not even a single pair of underwear. Nothing.

She stepped back inside and closed the door. The house was quiet. Her father was still standing in the kitchen, his coffee mug untouched, his face gray. Victoria was already heading up the stairs.

"Goodnight, Chloe," she said without turning around. "I hope you find your faith... strengthening."

Her footsteps faded down the upstairs hallway. A door closed.

Chloe stood in the front hall, naked, her arms wrapped around herself, staring at nothing. Her father looked at her---finally, actually looked at her---and his face crumpled. He opened his mouth like he was going to say something.

Then he closed it. He set down his coffee mug and walked past her, up the stairs, without a word.

The bedroom door closed. And then Chloe was alone.

* * *

She climbed the stairs slowly, one step at a time, her hand on the banister. The wood was smooth and cool under her palm. The family photos watched her from the wall---all those versions of herself, all those girls who had clothes and privacy and a life that made sense.

Her bedroom door was still open. The closet was still empty. The dresser drawers were still hanging open, bare and hollow. The pile of clothes was gone. The hangers swung gently on the rod, clicking against each other in the draft from the hallway.

Chloe closed the door behind her. The click of the latch was the best sound she'd heard all night---a barrier, a wall, something between her and the rest of the world.

She was alone now. Completely alone. Nobody could see her.

She grabbed the purple comforter off her bed and wrapped it around herself, pulling it tight, clutching it to her chest. The fabric was soft and familiar and for a moment---just a moment---she felt almost normal. Almost safe.

Oh god. Oh god oh god oh god. She threw them away. She threw everything away. I don't have any clothes. I don't have anything. I'm going to be naked forever. At school. At home. Everywhere. Everyone is going to see me. Everyone.

She sank onto the edge of her bed, still wrapped in the comforter, and stared at her empty closet. The tears came again---not the hot, panicked tears from before, but something slower. Something heavier. They rolled down her cheeks and dripped off her chin onto the purple fabric.

I can't do this. I can't. But what choice do I have? Tell the truth on Monday? Get expelled? Get arrested? Have a criminal record? That's not a choice. That's not a real choice.

She pulled the comforter tighter around herself and curled up on her bed, her knees drawn up to her chest, the blanket wrapped around her like a cocoon. She could feel her own heartbeat against the mattress. Fast. Too fast.

What am I going to do?
