I myself have a couple unfinished stories here (at least one).
I hate it, but at the same time, unless I get hit with a one-off that I absolutely NEED to get out, I will not return.
I’ve shifted all my focus to my ongoing series Magic.
If there is a story I have on here that is incomplete, I offer any author here the authority to continue/conclude it as they see fit, as long as they simply ask .

I always have mixed feelings about that. I mean, if I've liked one story an author has written, I'm usually happy to see more. I noodle at writing for my own gratification and don't have anything in a place where I'd want to post . I have several storylines in various states of development and I totally understand how one can run out of gas with an idea and switch to something else.
That being said, I've found with some authors that there might be 1-2 stories of theirs that push my buttons but others just don't for whatever reason. When that happens I'm a bit frustrated when a story is left hanging or a series ends sooner than I'd like.
So I guess my feeling is, don't post something with a cliffhanger unless you have the next chapter (almost) ready to not leave people hanging. But at the same time, I wouldn't want someone to create a big backlog of new content because they're stuck with an existing tale. I'll live.

I have to have written an entire story before I start posting it.
I know that I always find the middles of stories the hardest to write effectively. The start is usually setting up the background to the story, and I usually tend to plan them around a number of core elements, but without necessarily being certain beforehand on how to get between any of them or the order in which they occur.
Returning to the actual question originally asked, I shall exclude "permanently-ongoing" stories or series as the whole concept of them means the relevant author starting a separate story would technically always count regardless. I’m also not counting ongoing stories being interrupted for brief "I had an idea and committed it to a story before I forgot" short stories as that’s basically the same idea as the last one, just in the other direction. Contest entries would also fall into that latter category if we still had them, as would stories being placed on hold for any kind of technical or life reasons.
The main problem I have when authors resume stories after a long break is I’m more likely to have forgotten the "story so far" elements by then so must essentially begin the entire story as if I’d never read it before (assuming I didn’t only find it towards the end of said break in the first place!). That’s even an issue with some of my own stories: I’ve not updated them in so long that I don’t even remember all of what I’d already written.
But yes, authors are just as human as the rest of us. Sometimes we all simply run out of creative energy for one story and must start a different one to get the juices flowing again.
