Generally, I mix truth with fiction in what I've posted on this site (except in the 'True Stories' section).
The name of the school nurse in my latest chapter of "Nick's Sports Physical" is a hidden reference.

From my experience the best fictional stories still include at least one element drawn loosely on a real person or event.NickTwisp wrote: Fri Jun 06, 2025 12:45 am Generally, I mix truth with fiction in what I've posted on this site (except in the 'True Stories' section).

Re: Would You Rather: A True Story or a Great One?
While I work mainly in fiction, a good true story cannot be understated!
In fiction, ANYTHING can happen-
You get to explore fantasies left unfulfilled.
But in true stories,
There’s that added touch of realism.
It REALLY happened!
The author (if good enough) may be able to reenact the situation so we (the readers) feel like we’re in it with them!
Fiction allows for a broad brush, but nonfiction has a weight that can’t be ignored.

I'd rather read a good fictional story.

Re: Would You Rather: A True Story or a Great One?
The previous replies pretty much sum it up for me.
Fantasy universes don't float my boat (as one poster said elves etc) but I don't mind a good story if reality is stretched - eg school setting with some enforced nudity or bizarre rules on swimwear if a boy hasn't got pubes regardless of age. It makes the story, sets the scene, provides a setting etc.
I prefer a story that builds up to an event... if a story sets out boys with no hair swim naked and the character is introduced as sixteen year old Billy.... I know ultimately where the story is going. But a slow build up to his first nudity doesn't spoil the main event - because a good story is enjoying the reveal - an author works toward this and takes different routes to how I would have written the story.
A good story that has twists, turns, embarrassment and is enjoyable to read has to stretch things in truth.
My own stories are in a real setting and based on my own experiences growing up - they are fiction though. Was I forced to spend a whole day at home completely naked by my mother at 15? No. Was there an experience of a prolonged period of nudity in front of my mother at 15? Yes. I've embellished an experience but don't portray the story to be an autobiography. Equally not everything is rooted in experiences, so if I wanted a character to be stripped by a girl, I could write that but it wouldn't mean it actually happened to me.
True stories would generally be vignettes or rather brief - caught getting undressed or nipping across the hall to go to bathroom doesn't make a long read.
The voting option is; "A story that's grounded in reality... but not extraordinary" - IMO that is a fictional story, it doesn't mean it's true.
I assume all stories are fictional in ENM and ENF, and regarding the True Stories section... I keep an open mind but even though some may be true, some will be made up and others will be embellished truths. Nothing wrong with embellishing things....you should see my CV!!!!
