He wasn't on the toilet, but I did accidentally walk in on my friend who hadn't locked the bathroom door...

***

I had a sleepover at my house in year eight; we were around twelve and thirteen years old. I'd have probably still been twelve, and Matthew would have been thirteen for a while, since he was the eldest of our group.

The lock on my bathroom door is built into the handle. It's just a round knob that turns and extends the lock into a recess inside the door frame. If you didn’t know it did that, you might think it’s just a handle and the door doesn’t lock. Maybe that’s what caught out Matthew…

We were getting ready for bed and I didn't realise he was in there changing into his pyjamas. I thought he’d gone downstairs to get a drink of water, since he took his empty glass with him; and besides, he’d already gone to the bathroom to brush his teeth, so I wasn’t expecting him to go back in there just to get changed.

The rest of us all got changed in my room in front of each other, so it didn’t even occur to me he was off getting changed by himself. It’s not like he was the only one not wearing boxers either. Out of the five of us, only two guys wore boxers: Daniel and Roger. Like me, Sam wore briefs and was trying to hide them as we undressed.

Having changed into my pyjamas first, I headed to the bathroom to brush my teeth and finish getting ready for bed. Not expecting there to be anyone in there, I just pushed open the door without knocking. It was at exactly the wrong moment (for Mathew!). Having just stepped out of his jeans, he was putting them down on the towel rack and was about to reach for his pyjama trousers when I burst in. His shirt was already off, since he didn’t wear one to bed, so he was stood there in front of me, in my brightly lit bathroom, in nothing but his dazzling white briefs with a big picture of Bart Simpson’s head on the front! Now it made sense why he wanted to change alone!

For a split second that seemed to last for ages, we just stared at each other, him looking startled and me taking in the amusing sight; then he hastily snatched his pyjama bottoms and pulled them on.

Trying not to laugh, I quickly closed the door again, offering a somewhat disingenuous, “Oops, sorry, Matt!”

I already knew he wore briefs, but I didn’t know he still wore cartoon ones! I’d seen him wear pants like that back in first year, but since then I’d only ever seen him in plain dark colours, like I always wore. It’s funny to think what everyone wore when they thought no one was going to see. I also thought it a bit weird that he’d wear his pants under his pyjamas. Maybe he just panicked.

Neither of us mentioned to the others what happened, and we didn't talk about it later. I'm sure he just wanted to forget it. For a while afterwards, whenever I saw Matthew I wondered what pants he was wearing and if they were a cartoon pair like his Simpson ones.

Also, this happened to me in primary school... the door was locked, but that didn't stop Jason!

Fun story about Jason revealing to the entire school what type of underpants you had on that day. Although I'm sure it wasn't humorous to you at the time.

If I just had to pee, I always used the urinals in school and now do the same in any public restroom. I've never been pee-shy.
