Clothes cut off by paramedics

I was riding my bicycle to work when I got clipped from behind by a car and went over the handle bars at high speed. At first, I was just happy to be alive. I tried to sit up but realized that I wasn't able to. I needed help. I stared up at sky while the woman who hit me hysterically called 911. She was the mother of a student who she was driving to school.
A police cruiser arrived first, one officers started directing traffic away from me, the other kneeled by my head and reassured me the ambulance was on the way. I could hear the sirens get closer, the ambulance pulled up next to me creating a barrier between me and the passing traffic, I was on the road in the right lane, a few feet from the sidewalk.
2 paramedics appeared over top of me. 1 female in her 30's and a male in his 40's. The female asked me my name, Mark, I said looking up at her.

"Mark, I'm Kim, this is Dave. Do you remember what happened?" She asked

"I got hit from behind and went over the handlebars" I answered.

"Where does it hurt?"

"My chest and abdomen, I can't sit up"

Kim grabbed her trauma shears, she cut my neck tie off first, then cut my white shirt right up the middle and peeled it open exposing my torso.

Dave, the male paramedic put a neck brace around my neck and Kim listened to my breathing with her stethoscope. "Deep breath for me Mark", she requested. I tried to take inhale deeply but it was hard to breathe.

Kim examined my chest and abdomen with her hands. It was painful, I moaned as she pressed down on my belly.

"Abdomen is tender" I heard her tell Dave. It kind of scared me to hear that.

Dave was getting heart monitors on my chest. Kim pulled off my shoes and socks. "can you wiggle your toes for me, Mark?"

I felt like I was wiggling the toes on both feet. But I was only wiggling them on the right.

"can you feel me touching your left foot Mark?" Kim asked.

I couldn't, "I don't think so" I answered. "Dave, can you get the spinal board?"

Kim started cutting up the legs of my pants to my hips. She cut up each leg and peeled the material away leaving me in just my white briefs.

She pressed on my hips... I screamed in pain

before I could catch my breath, I felt the metal of her trauma shears slip under my briefs. She cut my underwear on each side and peeled them off also.

My first instinct was to cover my penis with my hands.

"That's not important right now Mark" she said as I fought through the pain to hide my biggest insecurity.

“You cannot move Mark, I know this isn’t comfortable, we’re here to help you”.

I reluctantly allowed her to place my hands by my sides and continue to examine my injured pelvis. I have never felt so helpless in my life, it was so embarrassing to have a choice over anything that was happening to me.

It was painful as she performed the pelvic exam, “he’s got a lot of pelvic swelling, he could be bleeding internally as well” When I heard her say that I got really scared and knew I had to just let them help me.

I was completely naked except for a neck brace and an oxygen mask, with my cut clothes lying on the road beneath me. The paramedics carefully rolled me onto my side and slid a spinal board underneath me. As they turned me, I caught sight of the woman who had hit me and her daughter standing only a few feet away, watching the rescue alongside several bystanders. In that moment, I realized everyone could fully see my penis. The paramedics secured me to the spinal board with straps and lifted me onto a gurney with wheels and wheeled me into the back of the ambulance. My head was taped down flat to the spinal board but I could see the bystanders out of the corners of my eyes.

Everyone at the scene saw me and my shrivelled up penis get loaded into the back of the ambulance. I'm grateful that I got help and I'm happy to say that I'm recovered physically but I don't think I'll ever recover from the embarrassment.

My sister is a nurse and although (at least until recently) they protected female modesty much more than the male's, major trauma is the exception where even female modesty goes out the window and both males and females are stripped naked regardless of who can see them to check for injuries, however, even than, the cover the female as quickly as possible.

I get that medical care takes absolute priority over modesty, but I'm amazed this all happened right in front of the woman and her school-aged daughter!

I googled the process. they actually have a name for it - "trauma naked" : In emergency medicine, "trauma naked" refers to the practice of completely undressing a patient—often by cutting their clothes away—to conduct a thorough head-to-toe examination. This critical step ensures that life-threatening injuries hidden under clothing are not missed, though it presents distinct clinical and emotional challenges.

I had no idea how a medical rescue worked, I never even thought about it before. So it was really a shock for me when they cut my underwear off. I have always been a really shy and private person. I don't even like wearing a bathing suit or using public restrooms.

Thanks, I was 37 years old and luckily no lasting damage. It wasn't just them who saw me either. I was hit pretty close to the school, so students were arriving for the day and walked right into the scene. There were at least 10 people watching the rescue, I felt so trapped.

Your story reminds me of some of the gore images and videos I used to see, which used to be much easier to find across the Web compared to now. In many nasty traffic accidents, you'd often find the mangled victims (often deceased) completely stripped naked from the accident itself male or female. In many gruesome ones, the bodies would be completely obliterated, for example, with the torso wrapped around a pole somewhere and the legs/lower half smeared 20~30m down the highway or rolled under the wheels of an 18 wheeler. Many of the most gruesome ones I recall came from Thailand, Mexico, India, Indonesia and in particular, Brazil. A major contributing factor of these gruesome incidents were the high speed of the vehicles, poorly maintained infrastructure bad driving skills, and lack of attention to safety concerns in these countries. And the prevalence of motorcycles ridden unsafely certainly contributed.

Often times, but not always, the victim would already be dead, but completely exposed, and there would be no attempt by observers protect their modesty. Those who died quickly may be considered lucky not having to endure the indignity of their situation in their final moments, as opposed to those who survived the initial crash, who would be writhing in agony and also unable to cover themselves, though the pain from their injuries may have masked their feelings of embarrassment. Many times the whole nearby village would crowd and gather around to observe the unfortunate victims, male or female, but male victims being much more common. Observers included many young children, and many observers would be filming the event and having the footage posted online for anybody across the world to see made it so much worse.

I am so glad that I live in a country that isn't like those described. Authorities here are very quick to cordon off the area or shut down the affected stretch of road and move people on. Barriers are usually very quickly erected around the victim to give them privacy whilst the paramedics work on them. And bystanders around such incidents generally respect the victim, and do not film or gather around in big crowds.

I believe that this is true from my own experiences. While I was in high school I had a part time job at a hospital moving patients. It seemed to me that the hospital staff were less concerned about the modesty of the male patients than the female patients.
