Likewise, I would have been interested to see what happens next. How does she get rescued in the end? What state is Paul in?

Either way, Anita is probably finished as a police officer after this. Heather gets into trouble for lending her the equipment. The perps have done enough to warrant a few life sentences being handed out, all aggravated as the offences have been committed against an emergency services worker, but as they're under 17 the case gets bogged down in the quagmire of youth court and reports by social services. And that includes Luke and Finn, who could end up having to sign the sex offenders register for a number of years.

There's a lot of research to be done to carry the story forward credibly and a myriad of rabbit holes to disappear down so I agree that you've parked it at just the right place.
