The movie, Ryan’s Daughter, with Sarah Miles as Rosy, the main character ,has a scene where the town’s people think that she betrayed them and they also know of her illicit affair with the commander of the hated English occupying Ireland. They rush as a mob to Rosy’s house and drag her out to be punished by shearing her hair. But things get out of hand and they end up stripping all her clothes off before shearing her hair. This was a time, Edwardian England, when simply an exposed woman’s ankle was scandalous so stripping a woman completely naked in public would have been extremely humiliating for a woman and a very intensely, sexually prurient experience for a mob of small town people to watch her clothes come off until she was completely naked especially the young boys.

Many of the townspeople consisted of boys, girls, women and many men who might never have seen a naked woman and may experience an illicit sexual thrill at the forced stripping of a female. Of course the movie doesn’t really show the entire stripping but enough to show that she was stripped completely naked by the mob. It’s actually quite lascivious as shown because they toss about her clothes, her boots, stockings and bloomers including her corset so it’s obvious that she’s completely naked before they finally shear off her hair.

The entire town of Kirrary in County Kerry, Ireland showed up as a mob seeking justice from Rosy Ryan whom they believed had betrayed their cause for independence from England. Kirrary was a small town in Ireland in 1918 with just about 300 people and they all knew and gossiped about each other. All the women were either married or virgins in the close catholic community and sex was not talked about in public discourse, although many of the young men and boys and many of the girls thought of it often and surreptitiously talked about it in adolescent ways.

The town’s older women and many of the jealous younger ones gossiped about Rosy. And Rosy didn’t help matters by taking up with the very good looking Major Doryan in such a scandalous extra marital affair. The young girls and women of the town, like Maureen, envied Rosy. They envied her beauty, her long, lustrous brown hair, and they also envied her love affair with the good looking Major because they lusted after such a sexual experience but their small town inhibitions wouldn’t allow them to admit such sinful lust. Many of the young women and girls often though of what Rosy might be experiencing with the major but kept such prurient thoughts secretly to themselves.

Maureen in particular wanted to see Rosie publicly humiliated and now that the whole town sought to inflict justice upon the hapless Rosie, she would get her way. She thought often of Rosy’s romantic experiences and such thoughts stirred her own sexuality and images. Such thoughts aroused her passions that she found hard to control and mixed with her envy of Rosy made her want to see Rosy humiliated in front of the whole town.

Maureen knew that such a good looking soldier as Major Doryan would never look at her the way he looked at Rosy and she craved to see Rosy publicly embarrassed and shamed in front of everyone because she herself would never have such pleasures as she imagined Rosy enjoyed with the major.

The town mob followed Mr. and Mrs. McCardle and the other self-righteous, sanctimonious old women with Maureen closely following right to the school house cottage where Rosy lived with her husband, Shaughnessy, a shy and quiet man. The mob seethed with prurient lust to see what would happen to the hapless girl, how she would react when her punishment was inflicted and what might happen to her in the public shaming planned by the McCardles.

Many of the young men, boys and women, including the lecherous older men, knew that the public shaming of Rosy could get out of hand in very embarrassing ways for the pretty woman and they anticipated a very humiliating spectacle for the girl. Many among the mob were hoping to see some of her clothes torn or removed and such thoughts fueled their lustful glee and anticipation to see if that might happen.

The young men, just boys really, and the girls laughed in leering ways knowing the McCardles planned to shear off Rosy’s beautiful, lustrous brown hair as punishment for her betrayal but also because they knew of her fornications with the Major. Many expected that Rosy may resist and then…well…then they’d have to force her. They wanted to see what might happen. They knew they would see something maybe even something they weren’t supposed to see and it drove the mob’s lust, everyone wanted to gawk and look at Rosy when the moment came and see what would happen to her and how she would be publicly shamed and embarrassed.

They barged into the cottage, confronting Shaughnessy and a clearly nervous and frightened Rosy. In her nervous fear of the crowd and the accusing words of Mr. McCardle, Rosy clutched at her shawl, her blouse under the shawl was completely buttoned up and around her neck in the modest fashion of the times with long skirts, petticoats and corsets. Women were always heavily clothed and thoughts of public exposure were scandalous and unthinkable.

After some harsh words regarding their suspicions about Rosy, Maureen and Mrs. McCardle grabbed the young woman by the arms and began pushing her out the door where the town mob waited impatiently to see Rosy’s punishment. It would be a public punishment, a public humiliation where the whole town could witness her embarrassment and she would be under the glare of the entire mob’s leering, taunting shouts and ogling staring eyes.

At McCardle’s insistence the laughing, leering mob of townspeople became quiet and then he ordered the women holding Rosy to “do it.” As everyone looked on Mrs. McCardle came forward and revealed the shears she was holding to Rosy who realized they were going to cut off her lovely hair. Rosy, horrified, of being publicly shamed by having all her hair forcibly removed as the mob watched began to struggle and resist as Maureen and another woman held her arms.

As Rosy resisted her blouse suddenly ripped open exposing her camisole and corset under the blouse and revealing part of her white neck, arms and upper chest, her breasts still covered by the camisole underwear.

Maureen, thrilled that Rosy’s blouse had ripped with her struggles, grabbed the blouse to continue the ripping. She wanted to continue tearing off all of Rosy’s clothes, to forcibly undress her until she was naked in front of the entire town mob. Maureen could think of no worse humiliation than taking off all of Rosy’s clothes in front of the leering mob of lecherous men and women, boys and girls as they eagerly watched the pretty woman forcibly undressed in public.

Maureen, jealous of the pretty Rosy, imagined with glee the crowd ogling as the most private, intimate parts of Rosy’s body, her female genitalia, her buttocks and breasts might soon be exposed to the leering mob causing so much embarrassment for the hapless young woman. She wanted to see Rosy embarrassed just in that manner, exposed naked in public in front of a leering, staring crowd. Such thoughts and the anticipation of stripping off the rest of Rosy’s clothes thrilled Maureen.

The crowd was hooting and laughing now as the women struggled and fell with Rosy’s blouse now torn open revealing her camisole under the torn blouse and her corset with her full breasts barely covered by the camisole.

Some of the boys ogled Rosie as her clothes tore off and shouted “they’re taking her clothes off” or “strip her, get her clothes off…oh, she’ll be naked!”

Rosy cringed inside as her blouse tore and she heard the hooting and calls to strip off her clothing.

As Rosy struggled to stand and get away, Maureen gleefully pulled her blouse tearing it and removing it completely exposing her white petticoat. Rosy felt hands pawing at her as she tried to stand and get away from Maureen but then Maureen lurched up and grabbed Rosy’s skirt tearing it completely off exposing her white petticoat. The crowd seemed wild with lust and everyone wanting to see Rosy undressed and naked as her clothing got torn off by the pawing hands of the lecherous women holding her. Anticipation of getting Rosy naked took hold among most in the mob and many expected she would soon be stripped of all her clothing.

Rosy felt herself lifted into the air by all the hands clawing at her clothing and someone seemed to be unlacing her boots and pulling them off. In a moment both of her boots came off exposing her small stockinged feet. The women holding Rosy and tearing at her clothes were in a frenzy now and intent on stripping her naked. Maureen knew, gleefully, that Rosy would be publicly nude in a few moments, completely naked in front of the mob, as the women holding her yanked at her clothing and underwear. Maureen and another woman held Rosy’s arms as Mrs. McCardle roughly cut Rosy’s hair. Rosy, completely naked, struggled as her hair fell. The crowd ogled the naked girl as this final humiliation, the shearing of her lovely hair took place.

The shearing of her beautiful hair left her head with a few short tufts that marred the girl’s beauty but satisfied the women, like Maureen, that she now appeared unattractive to any man.

With Rosy’s embarrassing humiliation and punishment now complete, Mrs. McCardle motioned to the women holding her to let her go and she stumbled and ran naked to the schoolhouse, sobbing and crying, Has the mob hooted and hollered. Rosy felt the cold ground on her bare feet as she ran, completely naked, to the shelter of the house, trying to cover her pubis and naked breasts as she moved.

The men holding Shaughnessy let him go and he followed the sobbing naked girl into the cottage where the door slammed shut. Many of the mob, most of them ogling boys, rushed to the windows of the cottage to see inside and leer at the nude girl as she was wrapped in a blanket by her husband.

In the next few days Rosy couldn’t help reliving her very public stripping by the mob of townspeople. She tried to put it all out of her mind but couldn’t avoid the feelings of embarrassment and humiliation as she helplessly felt her clothes being stripped from her body leaving her publicly naked in front of all the leering, laughing townspeople. And yes, it's too bad they don't really show much in that scene. Once her skirt and blouse get torn off, the camera scene changes and all you see is the crowd surrounding her. But there's enough shown to imply much. Her shoes and bloomers were getting thrown about so they had to lift her to get her shoes off and it's obvious that she's completely naked before they shear off her hair. Michael, the mute, comes upon the scene as everyone is dispersing and finds her stockings and underwear cast about the grounds and seems to realize that she was stripped naked.

I've never seen though, although in 1974 Mad Magazine did a satire illustrated version which include the stripped and shaven woman. I'd always wondered what the movie actually showed. It seems it was much more implied than shown.
