Is this common in your countries?

Post by Dotka »

Hello everyone. I wanted to bring up this topic—I don’t think I’ve seen any other posts about it on the site, perhaps because it’s something quite specific to Latin America. Still, I imagine most people might find it interesting. Essentially, in Latin America, it is all too common that if an alleged thief is caught—with or without evidence—and happens to be unlucky, they often end up suffering a horrific public humiliation. I’ve personally witnessed at least five such incidents, and I’m aware of many others that went viral. To get straight to the point: the thief is usually stripped naked in public—if they’re lucky, they might be allowed to keep their underwear on—beaten, and tied to a utility pole until the authorities arrive. Of course, the specifics vary significantly depending on the gravity of the situation or the "mood" of the neighbors who caught the individual. Most commonly, the person is stripped and spanked with a wooden board; sometimes they are simply tied up, forced to run through the streets naked, or made to wear a sign with a humiliating message. There are even worse cases—which I won’t go into detail about, as I don’t think many would find them interesting—but I once witnessed someone being stripped, having a wooden stick shoved into their rectum, and then being set on fire. Weeks later, on the very street where it happened, large banners were hung displaying photos of the incident, with a warning that the same fate awaited any other thief. In fact, this practice is fairly common: after stripping and tying up an alleged thief, neighbors often hang banners featuring photos of what took place. Most of these incidents remain local—contained within the neighborhood or the immediate area—but if the thief is truly unlucky, the lynching becomes a media spectacle, discussed across several countries. I recall two specific examples of this, for which there is even evidence. The first... There was an incident—I believe in Mexico—involving a man who was stripped naked. When the authorities arrived, they handcuffed him and left him sitting on the sidewalk; they didn’t even bother to provide him with anything to cover himself. The reason this case became such a hot topic—to the thief’s great embarrassment—was the size of his penis. I don’t usually pay attention to or judge such things, but his penis was truly tiny. Someone took a photo of him in that state, and it blew up on social media. Even now, you can still find posts about it, with comments from women across Latin America mocking the poor man, creating memes, and comparing him to "Sonny Angel" dolls—which, for those who don’t know, are toys that feature a small, comical representation of a penis. There were so many other comments that I couldn’t possibly list them all. A second case—which many might consider even more humiliating—involved a young man, perhaps in his early twenties, who foolishly tried to mug a woman in her forties in Colombia. He didn’t count on her refusing to be intimidated; she grabbed him by the ear, and her angry shouting drew a crowd, who captured the whole thing on video. Faced with so many people, the young man had no choice but to endure a lecture from the woman. Things took a turn when she ordered him to take off his clothes. He really didn’t have a choice—when you’re accused of robbery and surrounded by a crowd likely to beat you if you don’t comply, you can’t exactly say no. In the video, you can see him stripping completely naked while the woman continues to yell at him. Once he’s bare, another woman—in her thirties—steps in to gather up his clothes. Finally, the first woman pulls his hair and kicks him, at which point he simply takes off running—completely naked—while, to add to the humiliation, you can even hear a dog barking. ...who starts barking at him, and the guy just ends up screaming in an effeminate way while running off. Once again, this video went viral on social media and even made it onto news programs all across Latin America; the woman herself even became something of a celebrity after the incident. The video is still circulating, and I find it strange that no one on this site has shared it yet.

Regarding the incidents I witnessed, they weren't widely discussed. To briefly mention a few, there was one where a man was tied naked to a post. I remember that one because he was tied up all day, and I saw a woman insulting him for having an erection. Another involved a boy, maybe 17 or 18, whose mother came to his defense because he wasn't actually guilty. And, in case you're wondering, this also happened to minors. I'll talk more about that if you're interested. As I mentioned, there was the man who was set on fire, a woman who wasn't tied up but was half-naked in a street market, and another boy who was forced to walk naked with a sign. If I see that this is a topic of interest, I could recount these incidents in more detail, but basically, I wanted to bring it up. I see that no one has talked about similar situations on this site.

I have watched the video with the Colombian thief, that one was notorious, it must have been really humiliating for the guy to become (in)famous like that. The video would be perfect for the CFNM thread, it's just that we focus on movies/TV shows.

The video can be found here:

No, this doesn't happen in my country. In some extreme cases the thief can be beaten up if the victims are angry or violent enough, but not stripped naked. And they would be in trouble for doing it. Although, when some guy stole my iPhone some years ago, I really wished he would have suffered a public humiliation

I'm interested in reading more about incidents like these in Latin America.

Great stories but no, this type of thing would be illegal in the U.S. After apprehension & arrest, detainees are generally strip-searched in a private room at the incarceration facility. And this is done by same-sex attendants.

It’s a shame to hear that this isn’t as common in other countries; a body search sounds uncomfortable, but personally, I believe that public punishment—while less invasive—is more humiliating and far more satisfying for those of us who have been victims of theft. Regarding the other incidents, I think I’ll split them into two parts so as not to end up with an enormous text. The first one involved a man in his 30s who was caught pickpocketing; someone spotted him, he was seized, stripped naked, and tied to a post—specifically, he was positioned facing the post with his hands bound behind it, leaving him completely exposed. I found out about it quite by chance: the man had been tied to a post in front of a *tortillería* (tortilla shop), and my mother had sent me there to buy some tortillas. Upon arriving, I couldn't help but notice the naked man tied to the post. The young woman who served me told me everything that had happened—with a smile on her face. This was two years ago, so I remember it very clearly. While she was helping me, another woman—in her 40s, accompanied by her daughter—arrived; she didn't just seem happy, she appeared absolutely furious. I don’t know what was going through the man’s mind, but at that moment, he began to develop an erection—not a full one, but enough for his penis to rise, which the woman standing next to me noticed. The young woman who served me just looked on with an expression of disgust. I remember the woman who had arrived with her daughter saying something like, "Can you believe this bastard?" She walked up to the man, spat on him, and shouted angrily, "You’re a pig!" I later learned that the man remained tied up there for at least five hours. I’m left with a mix of embarrassment and curiosity—wondering, for instance, how many passersby saw him, or what the perspective of the woman at the *tortillería* must have been, given that she could see him the entire time he was tied there. I still live in the same area, so I might ask her about it one of these days—without being too obvious, of course. I also wonder if his erection was simply due to... nerves, or if there was some other reason—I don’t know, I’d be interested to hear what you think about that.

It is mentioned these punishments also happened to younger people.
I'd be curious if these punishments were the same for them as for adult offenders.
Is there a double standard, meaning girls were less likely to be bound and stripped than the boys?

I should clarify that when I refer to minors being subjected to this treatment, I am generally talking about youths between the ages of 15 and 18; people tend to show some compassion toward those under 14. The reason people began punishing minors is that laws here in Mexico offer them excessive protection. This leads criminal groups to use minors to carry out their "dirty work," and since the legal system fails to take action, people often choose to take matters into their own hands.

The punishments are the same as those used for adults. I witnessed two such instances: one involving a youth of about 17 or 18 who allegedly tried to mug an older man, and another involving a boy of about 16 who was falsely accused of harassing a girl. While the crowd tends to be somewhat less aggressive in these cases, the individuals are still stripped naked, tied to a post—or forced to walk around naked—and subjected to what are known as *tablazos* (spankings with a board). These are administered using literally any piece of wood found on the street—large, small, dirty, or irregularly shaped; it doesn't matter. They strike them until their buttocks are left red. The only difference compared to the humiliation an adult might face is that a minor is never subjected to a group beating—unless they appear to be over 18 or exceptionally mature—otherwise, the punishment is limited strictly to spanking.

Actually, your last question surprises me quite a bit; I had never considered it before. Most people—myself included—would find the idea of tying a young woman, naked, to a post to be unthinkable. While I generally try to challenge double standards based on gender, in this specific case, I agree with the majority: doing something like that to a young woman goes too far and could even be considered sexual abuse. Furthermore, leaving her tied up creates a risk that someone might approach and take advantage of her—not to mention that most offenders happen to be male. When it comes to women receiving similar punishments—even adult women—the situation is handled differently. I once witnessed an incident at a street market where a woman was accused of theft by some vendors. No men intervened; instead, the women present stripped her from the waist up. They didn’t tie her to a post or anything of the sort—they didn’t even bind her hands—but simply left her sitting on the ground. They lectured her, occasionally pulling her hair or throwing things like trash or water at her, while they waited for the authorities to arrive.

I have seen this in movies about Italy, taking place in the 1950s.
Women who the community deemed needed some punishment were humiliated in the street. Often the woman's hair is sheared
off as well as the outer garments. The movie I saw didn't show any full stripping, but I suppose that could have happened.
