Fixed the "Mrs. Perkins" error.
I conceive of the track coach as being somewhat bored and disinterested in whatever the boys are doing in the post-run gang showers. Since there is some truth to this otherwise fictionalized story, I am picturing the layout of the Lockeroom as the coach being unable to see into the shower area from his office. That's how it was when I was on the track team in high school. Our coach was in his mid-50s at the time and seemed like he was just riding out the years until he could retire. Consequently, he rarely checked up on us while we were showering.
Coach never really was aware (or really wanted to know) what David Perkins and the rest of us got up to in there...
