Actually Joan or Joana is a female name. Juan would be the corresponding male name.

The Spanish painter Joan Miro was male, although he was Catalan, which may make a difference.

It seems it's a disputed subject:

It seems that, when derived from French, people use Joan as a feminine name, mainly because of Joan of Arc. And in Spanish and Catalan people use it as men's name.
