My suggestion would be instead of making the stepmother so vindictive and manipulative, it would be better if her motivations were simply that she wanted Kate to be raised the way she was raised, rather than wanting to knock her down a peg.
At that history of how stepmom was raised then puts her at risk of punishment too.
What's more, posts can simply be edited, to create continuity in this here thread. Only, at this point, that would look kind of weird because of all of our comments.
