Out of curiosity, was there a particular milestone that triggered it? Like, did she see you with new hair or hear your voice change and abruptly decide it was time to talk to you in more grownup terms? Did she say anything about it when she made the change?

The change might have occurred after she was present at one of my yearly physicals. I do remember getting the “birds and the bees” lecture after she saw the changes in my body at my 13th exam.

I know it’s hard to believe but I was naked for the exam. My mother saw everything, but that never bothered me as much as the doctor and nurse seeing me.

The nurse, too? Did they have you strip as soon as you got into the exam room and stay naked for the whole thing?

Yes, the nurse was there, but usually only for the beginning of the exam. Taking my height and weight and having me read the eye chart. Then the nurse would step out and eventually the doctor would come in the room. Occasionally the nurse would be with the doctor but not often. The policy of this pediatrician’s office seemed to be undressing as soon as you went into the exam room if you were there for a check up. This was the late 70’s and early 80’s and no one seemed to care about children’s modesty. This was particularly true for boys. I had this pediatrician until I was 17. My mother was with me for the exam until I was 15.

From a practice perspective there seems like there would be some efficiency in having the patient strip right away so it doesn't cause delays later especially if the kid is going to be balky about it. The doc's hands can go right where they need to as the exam progresses and spend more time evaluating rather than being "in transition".
When I was young enough that I willingly took everything off and wore just the paper gown when asked, even then I remember the exam flowed pretty quickly when he was able to just brush aside the paper and keep going.
There's something particularly embarrassing though about the thought of standing naked for the nurse while reading the eye chart. I remember one office I was in where they had to open the door and have you stand a foot out in the hallway to be at the correct distance -- that would have made it much worse...
I always called it my peepee until I was probably 10 or 11 and then it changed into my wiener, and then dick when I was 14 or 15. My mom called it my peepee or peeper until I was 15 and finally showed signs of puberty.
