Macduff’s son, played by Mark Dightam, stands in the tub while being bathed by Lady Macduff. He looks to be 10-11 years old, maybe 12, but fully prepubescent. Full frontal nudity, and rear nudity as the scene progresses. Very interesting capture of the realism of how this would go in medieval times. He’d stand up, sit down, stand up, whatever his mother ordered while she went to town on him. You wonder what was going through the actor’s head in advance of having to film this and how stressed he was standing naked in front of the woman while his naked body was being filmed. There definitely was some bravery required of him.
I don’t like that it was Roman Polanski behind the camera who likely was the one who insisted on this, but I did find out this was filmed right after his pregnant wife Sharon Tate was murdered by the Manson family. You can sense that the cherubic naked boy in this scene, before it delves into a very disturbing and upsetting home invasion scene, is a symbol of raw vulnerability.
I found out the scene is directly out of not only Polanski’s psyche, but his own experience. Here is some trivia I found on the IMDb page
‘When crew members suggested to Roman Polanski that perhaps the film was too unrealistically gory for its own good, Polanski reportedly replied, "I know violence. You should've seen my house last summer."’
‘The scene in which Macbeth's thugs massacre Macduff's household was based on Roman Polanski's memory of SS officers ransacking his house as a child.’ You wonder if he himself was getting out of the tub when it happened.
‘Mark Dightam, who was eleven when he controversially appeared full frontally naked as MacDuff's son, was not allowed to see the film when it was released because it had been classified AA and he was under 14 at the time.’ I don’t think this was actually that controversial, largely because everyone was up in arms that the film depicted Francesca Annis totally naked. If it were filmed today, it would surely be the opposite.
Finally, the most eerie and grim piece of trivia I found that truly sends shivers down my spine: ‘ During the set up of the gruesome death scene of Lady MacDuff's children, director Roman Polanski was instructing a four-year-old blonde girl on how to play dead, while smearing fake blood all over her body. Polanski playfully asked the girl what her name was, to which she replied "Sharon."’

We watched that in school, definitely an awkward scene for a full class to see
