It's dark cos Higurashi When They Cry started as a series of murder-mystery games.

So the initial manga and anime adaptations of it were basically adaptations of all the possible game endings, and thus were full of the characters killing each other in horrible ways and being secret (or not so secret) psychopaths. I think the premise is the village where they live is cursed or something.

Higurashi REI, which that scene is from, was made later using the same characters. I think it's a little bit lighter tonally than the original anime, but it's evidently still really dark.

If this were from the 80’s or early 90’s, we might have actually gotten to see how big it was, but alas, current times prevent such things, I believe.

Rena in heat for keiichi is always a classic. Even though they touched it a bit in gou it's a shame they didn't do a better job for it in sotsu.
