Chapter 1: The Threat
There were these two girls. Bullies. You might picture bullies as big and tough, but not these girls. They looked like perfect little angels—cute dresses, perfect hair, and pretty faces. And did I mention? They were two years older than me. Eighth graders, while I was just a sixth grader. It really wasn’t a fair fight.
Haley was clearly the leader of the two. I thought she was amazing. I probably had a little crush on her. Sorry, I’m lying. I absolutely had a crush on her. At least at first. She was slender and usually wore those plaid school-girl skirts. We didn’t have uniforms at our school, but that’s the kind of thing she would wear. And those piercing blue eyes? Perfect straight blonde hair? Plus, being two years older, she had started to develop nicely, and I definitely noticed.
It started off simple enough. Haley would come up to me at lunch and take something off my plate—like a bag of chips. Then she’d stand there, dangling it in front of me, hand on her hip, and say, “You want it back, Jimmy? That’ll be a dollar.”
The first time it happened, I was so shocked. I mean, I had never been bullied before. I had a lot of friends, was athletic, and my grades were good. Maybe I wasn’t one of the “coolest” kids, but I was no wimpy nerd. So when she did that, I was genuinely taken aback. I thought maybe she was kidding.
“Ha. Very funny, Haley. Give ’em back,” I said, trying to sound casual.
But she stood firm. “One dollar.”
“Are you kidding?”
“Try me.”
And it was weird, but I felt this lump in my throat, like I was going to cry. That was a new sensation for me. I was a pretty confident kid, even at eleven. But instead of standing my ground, I reached into my pocket and handed her a dollar. I figured I’d just pay her off and get rid of her. She happily snatched the bill from my fingers and tossed the chips back onto my tray.
“Thanks for doing business, Jimmy. See you next time.” And she swished away, her beautiful hair swaying behind her.
I looked around, hoping none of my friends had seen. Thankfully, I was having early lunch that day, and the friends I usually ate with weren’t there. Okay, so that was weird. But it was over. Seemingly.
Nothing happened for a few days. But the next week, I had early lunch again. And like clockwork, there was Haley. This time, she wore a tight pink sweater that really showed off her... er... development. Every part of me noticed. My eyes moved up to her chest, lingering longer than they should have. I mean, come on. I was in sixth grade. What do you expect?
But this time, she wasn’t alone. She was with her friend, Bella. Bella was stunning too, with brown hair pulled back in a long ponytail. She wore tight jeans and a long white button-down shirt. Maybe not as developed as Haley, but certainly fit. Her face was beautiful, at least to me. Her skin was a little darker than Haley’s creamy white complexion. I only mention this because their good looks, combined with the fact that they were two grades above me, made me incredibly nervous.
Still, I tried to play it cool. “Oh, hi, Haley. Bella.”
Haley ignored me as she spoke to Bella about me. “See, Bella? This is the kid I mentioned.”
Bella looked at me. “Oh, Jimmy. Sure. I remember him from elementary school.”
I kept my head down, focusing on my food.
“Right,” said Haley. “He’s the one who was so quick to give me a dollar when I took his chips last week.”
Bella casually laughed. “Think he’ll do it again?”
Haley swiped my chips. “I don’t know. Let’s see!” And in a blink, she was standing there, smugly holding my bag of chips.
I looked at Haley, frustration bubbling up. “Come on, Haley. What’s this about?”
“This is about you giving me a dollar, and I’ll give you your chips back.”
I had learned about bullying. I knew I shouldn’t give in. It was a mistake last week, and I wasn’t going to make it again.
“Fine,” I said, not looking up. “You want those chips so bad, keep ’em. But you’re not getting another dollar from me.” And I went back to eating.
That kind of surprised her. Then, all prim-and-proper like, she sat down on the bench next to me. Right next to me. Like, touching. She gestured for Bella to sit down on the other side of me. I was scared shitless, but no way was I going to let it show. I could almost feel their breath. What were these girls going to do?
Haley got real close to me. My heart was pounding like crazy. And she said, quietly but calmly, "You're going to give us a dollar whenever we want."
Bella echoed in my other ear, "That's right, Jimmy. Whenever we want."
It was intimidating, but I wasn't giving in. I tried to sound forceful. "And if I don't?" my voice cracking a bit.
And then Haley said something that still gives me shivers to this day. She looked right at me and said, "If you don't? Then Bella and I are going to come over to your house and strip you."
Holy what???
"Bullshit," I said. I don't know how I had the courage to say that. I was trembling inside... and probably out. But I said it.
I didn't know how they were going to react. Were they going to beat me up? I mean, surely not. Not right in the lunchroom. But no way were they going to come over to my house and strip me. Ridiculous.
They both jumped back in mock surprise when I said, "Bullshit."
"Oh! Tough kid," Bella shot back.
Then they just kind of giggled and stood up.
"Suit yourself," Haley said.
Then Bella, "Yeah, Jimmy. Birthday-suit yourself!"
They laughed hysterically at Bella's little joke. I was trembling inside, but I wasn't going to show it.
Haley gave me a sweet smile and said, "Aw, little Jimmy. You think you're so tough. But you know what, little Jimmy? You're going to regret not giving us a dollar. You really are."
And they gave me a little wave and a smirk before turning and walking away, laughing out loud as they went.
I sat there, stunned. I mean, really stunned. Who walks up to a person and says they're going to come over to your house and strip you? Plus, they were two years older than me! I mean, come on! Weren't they afraid I was going to tell? But then I thought about it. How could I possibly tell? I mean, that's awfully embarrassing. I'm going to go up to a teacher and say, "Haley and Bella said they're going to strip me if I don't give them a dollar?" Absurd. No, I'd just keep it to myself. Clearly it would never happen, and hopefully by standing up to them, that would be the end of it. That's what I was hoping.
But still, when I went home after school, I was nervous all night. I mean, what if they meant it? What if they really meant it? What if they climbed through my window while I was sleeping and they woke me up and stripped me? My imagination started to run wild. When I was in the bathroom getting ready for bed, I was afraid there'd be a knock at the door. "Oh, we're just here to see Jimmy. He's helping us with our homework." Something like that. Mostly, I was afraid of them sneaking in through the window. When I was showering that night, I imagined them opening the bathroom window and seeing me naked in the shower. It was completely irrational, I know. But I was in sixth grade. The whole thing was terrifying. Even if I kept telling myself it was silly and would never happen, there would be that small part of me. That moment when my heart would skip a beat, thinking they might actually do it. And worse, imagining myself naked while they stood there laughing at me.
I double checked that my bedroom window was locked before I went to bed, and I even locked my door (which I never, ever did). Just in case.
I kept playing it over in my mind. I kept hearing Haley's voice, almost whispering in my ear, "We're going to come over to your house and strip you." Over and over. "We're going to come over to your house and strip you." I kept telling myself it couldn't possibly happen. How would they get in? And how were they planning to strip me? Would they hold me down and try to take off my clothes? And if they did, what did she mean by "strip?" Maybe she just meant down to my underwear. But what if she meant all the way? Certainly, I was stronger than them. Well, at least I thought I was. Of course, there were two of them. Then the most horrific thought of all... what if they actually stripped me completely naked... underwear and everything, and I was totally naked, and I got... you know... excited? While they were looking? It was way too much for my sixth-grade brain to process.
There was no way. That's what I kept telling myself. Absolutely no way.
It took a while for me to fall asleep that night.
