When I was 12 years old, I was in the hospital to have my tonsils removed. An Asian nurse came in to take my temperature. She told me to lay on my side. Not knowing her plan, I turned on my right side facing her. She got mad and started scolding me saying "I am your nurse. You have to obey me." Still confused, I turned to my other side. Sure enough, she opened the back of my gown and put the thermometer up my butt. I didn't really care that she saw my butthole, but I was embarrassed about being treated like a little kid.

My father happened to walk by at that time. He said later that it was the stupidest thing he ever saw.

There were curtains they could draw around the beds and they kept the one between beds drawn. The kid in the bed across from you could see you. Across from me was a girl who was maybe 12 and having her tonsils out. Whenever the nurses needed to do anything with her, like take her temp (which was always rectal) they drew the curtain around so nobody could see. When they needed to do anything with me - like rectal temp, enema and shaving my pubes - they left the curtain open! I complained but the nurses poo-pooed me saying the girl couldn't see anything. I still complained and my mom stuck her head around and told me to stop being a brat!

That's interesting. So you were used to having your temperature taken rectally even at 14? Except for that incident, I didn't have it taken rectally after the age of 2 or 3.

No, I wasn't used to it. I hadn't had it done that way since I was very young - so young I didn't even remember it being done. It was just standard procedure in the pediatric wing.

The subject of rectal temp-taking at the pediatrician's office is so interesting to me at a personal level.

I feel like I have maybe one partial memory of that happening - the alcohol smell, being in a room that's on the cooler side (my doctor's office seemed to be at a perpetual 68 degrees), and then that funny feeling of embarrassment I associate with the thermometer going in (although not really the memory of the thermometer itself being inserted). It's disjointed enough that maybe it's a false memory.

And I also vaguely remember at least one time where the nurse chastised me for not cooperating and keeping the thermometer under my tongue and still.

What I clearly remember though is being small and sitting in briefs or a paper gown and staring at the cart with the two thermometer jars and watching nervously when the nurse went to the cart to see which jar she went to, and feeling relief when it was the one labeled "Oral".

Taken together, that seems to suggest I went through a period where I couldn't hold still enough for the oral method and they switched back to rectal. Otherwise why would I remember that concern about the jars? I wonder if that kind of thing might have made it into the notes in my file. It'd be interesting to see but I imagine those records are long gone now.

I think this kind of thing its done on purpose at times, to cause some embarrassment for males. Mothers have been known to induce degrees of humiliation for their sons. It must give females some pleasure to expose males.

Perhaps. I was kind of being a brat before that, so maybe it was just payback!
