From an interview by WBEZ Chicago: https://www.wbez.org/morning-shift/2017 ... swim-naked
Elle said she went to suburban Highland Park High School and remembers how she learned of the nude-swimming policy.

Elle: My girl friend and I, we were freshmen, and so we were new to this school. And during one of our free periods, we decided to roam around and explore the school. So we came upon the boys’ pool and the doors were locked, but we could hear voices. So we were peaking through the slits in the door. I looked first and I was like, “Oh my God. Patsy, they’re naked.” So Patsy, she pushes me aside, and we were mortified and ran away giggling.

Eng: This was the fear of every 14-year-old boy, that this was actually happening.

Well, at least the doors were locked. I've heard stories from these days where the pool was not locked so the boys were basically at the viewing mercy of whoever decided to walk through the pool area.

Talked to an old woman once who told me they made the girls do gym class naked so they would not stink up their clothes. She was in school in the 1940s.

From what some older relatives have told me, this situation was common during the era of nude male swimming in high school pools. Supposedly male-only during Swimming Block but nothing to really stop a girl from walking in. Even some of the female teachers would find an excuse the "go talk to the coach" and thus see some of their male students naked poolside of in the water.

Male modesty was a low priority in that era. Especially with teenage boys or below in age.
