Why do the spammers waste their time? This will all be cleaned up in a couple hours and they accomplish nothing.

It's a well known tactic for spammers. Create a ton of accounts, leave them dormant for a while then activate them later.

Hopefully this was just one that slipped through the net and isn't a sign of this returning full scale.

I think any account without any likes or comments two weeks after joining should be deleted anyway to be honest.
