I suspect the producers and the parents exploited them.
I'm sure they got paid, just not paid well enough considering they were showing it all off
Oftentimes directors just put out calls for local people as extras and that includes preteens or teens.
I imagine they just got paid whatever the regular rate was, regardless of nudity status
Yeah, when the extras showed up to film the scene, did they know in advance just who would be issued a loincloth? And who would have to just stand there exposed.

I doubt it. I expect they just gave all the adults one and told the less developed boys to stay naked
