Interesting question. Looking back, I guess she must have seen it in one of her Mom's or Dad's books or shows. I know it made an impression on me later in my life, because I'm always using something like it in my stories.

At the time, though, I didn't think of it as a "technique." It was just one more creepy thing Linda did to me.
