THE HYGIENE PROBLEM - CHAPTER 1

As they sat in their small apartment, surrounded by still-unpacked boxes, Maria brought up a topic that her 14-year-old son, Juan, had been trying to avoid for years. "M'ijo, we need to talk about your hygiene," she said, looking at him with a serious expression. Juan felt his face start to burn with embarrassment. His sister, Sofia, who was 3 years younger than him, looked up from her book with a mischievous glint in her eye. "What's going on, Mama?" she asked, already knowing the answer.

Maria hesitated for a moment before continuing, "Well, Juan, you're getting older now, and it's time you started taking care of yourself. You know, down there." Juan felt like he was going to die. He had always hated talking about this, and now his sister was listening in, a sly grin spreading across her face. "Yeah, hermano, you don't want to be a stinky boy, do you?" Sofia teased, making Juan's face burn even more. "Shut up, Sofia," he muttered, trying to make himself not look upset.

Maria continued, "Juan, you know, I use to clean you up when you were little, but now you're old enough to do it yourself. You need to make sure you're pulling your foreskin back and cleaning underneath it. Is very important for your health." Juan felt a wave of panic wash over him. He hadn't touched himself down there in years, and the thought of pulling his foreskin back was horrifying to him. He had always hated doing it, and now his mother was expecting him to do it every day. "But Mom, I don't want to," he whined, feeling like a baby.

Sofia chimed in again, "Yeah, Mama, maybe you should do it for him. He's too scaredy-cat to do it himself." Juan shot his sister a dirty look, but she just giggled and continued to tease him. Maria sighed and said, "No, Sofia, Juan needs to learn how to take care of himself. But I will give him another option. He can go see the school nurse, and she can help him out." Juan's heart sank at the thought of someone else seeing him naked, but it was better than his mother doing it.

As they continued to talk, Juan couldn't help but think about how much his life had changed since they moved to the US from Argentina. He had always been a bit self-conscious about his body, especially his wide hips and big butt, which made him feel like he didn't fit in with the other boys. And now, with this foreskin issue, he felt like he was even more of an outcast. Sofia, on the other hand, seemed to be adjusting to their new life just fine. She was making friends at school and was already picking up the language. Juan, on the other hand, felt like he was struggling to keep up.

As the conversation came to a close, Maria said, "Okay, Juan, I’m gonna give you a choice. I can do it for you, right now, to show you that it’s not that bad… or you can go see the school nurse. But something needs to be done. You can't just ignore it forever." Juan nodded, feeling a sense of dread wash over him. He knew he had to make a decision, but he was scared of what would happen either way. Sofia, still teasing him, said, "Yeah, hermano, you'd better get used to people seeing your pee-pee. You're going to have to show it to someone eventually!" Juan's face burned with embarrassment as he thought about the humiliation that lay ahead.

For a week, Juan couldn't shake off the feeling of anxiety that had been building up inside him. His mother would constantly ask him if he had made a decision yet, and his sister, Sofia, would tease him mercilessly about his "pee-pee".

"M'ijo, have you thought about what you're going to do?" Maria would ask, concern etched on her face. Juan would just shake his head, feeling like he was being pulled in two different directions. "Yeah, hermano, are you going to let Mommy touch your pee-pee?" Sofia would chime in, giggling at her own joke. Juan would just roll his eyes and try to ignore her, but it was hard to shake off the feeling of embarrassment that lingered long after the conversation was over.

One day, when Juan was home alone, he decided to take a closer look at himself in the mirror. He locked his bedroom door and stripped everything off, feeling the usual mix of shame and curiosity. As he gazed at his reflection, he couldn't help but feel embarrassed by his body. He turned around, looked at his backside. His big butt and thick thighs made him feel girly, and his tiny "pee-pee" (as Sofia called it) sure didn't help. He was still completely hairless down there. He was almost fifteen, shouldn’t he look bigger already? Shouldn’t he have some hair? He looked down at his foreskin, feeling a sense of dread wash over him. He knew he had to do something, but he was scared of the pain that came with it.

Juan decided to try pulling back his foreskin, just to see if he could do it. He took a deep breath and gently tugged on the skin, wincing in pain as it refused to budge. "Ow, ow, ow," he whispered, feeling like he was going to cry. He tried again, but it was like his foreskin was glued on. He could only move it a few millimeters before giving up, feeling defeated. "Why is this so hard?" He wondered if he was the only one in the world with this problem. He got dressed quickly, feeling like he had been staring at himself for too long, but the feeling of embarrassment lingered for the rest of the day.

As the week went by, Juan found himself walking around school in a nervous, anxious haze. He would catch himself staring at the nurse's office, wondering what it would be like to go in there and have someone else look at him. He had always thought of a nurse as an older lady, someone kind and gentle, but when he walked by the office one day, he was surprised to see a young guy sitting at the desk. He looked like he was in his early 20s, with a serious face and a messy mop of hair. Juan felt a mix of emotions. Was it better or worse that it was a guy? A young guy at that? He wasn't sure, but he knew he had to make a decision. He convinced himself that having a man look at it was better than having a female, of any age, look at it.

"M'ijo, have you made a decision yet?" Maria asked, as soon as he walked in the door. Juan took a deep breath and let it out slowly, feeling a sense of resolve wash over him. "Yeah, Mom, I've decided to go to the nurse," he said, trying to sound confident. Maria nodded, looking relieved, and Sofia looked up from her book, a surprised expression on her face. "Really, hermano? You're going to let the nurse touch your pee-pee?" she asked, giggling. Juan just rolled his eyes and tried to ignore her, hoping he had made the right decision, no matter how embarrassing it was going to be.

As they sat down to dinner that night, Maria made a point of showing how proud she was of her son. "M'ijo, I just wanted to say, I’m really proud that you stepped up and decided to have this taken care of," she said, looking concerned but pleased. “It’s a big step. You sure that’s what you want to do?” Juan nodded, feeling a sense of determination, but also frustration, wash over him. "Ugh, yeah, Mom, like I said, I really don’t want you to do this, that’s just weird, and I don't want Queen Annoying over here to have anything to do with this," he said, shooting daggers with his eyes at his sister, who was trying to stifle a giggle. Maria nodded, looking understanding, and Sofia just shrugged, looking like she was already planning her next bit of teasing. "Okay, m'ijo, great, if that's what you want, then that's what we'll do," Maria said, smiling softly.

Possibly Juan could have an inflammation called "balanitis" which can occur in uncircumcised males who do not regularly retract their foreskin. Hopefully the male school nurse can assist with this condition.
