Have you ever noticed, dear child, how Halloween tales all begin the same?
Nights of candy, night of cheer, it always starts so tame.
The laughter echoes, as the children begin to arrive,
All is too busy for anyone to see something fowl growing inside.
A word, a look, mistakes easily forgotten,
And yet, from such mischief, ill fortune if oft begotten
Now lean in close and gather near,
For I have a tale you might like to hear.

The house settled with a creak as the girl in the mirror leaned to her left slightly, reaching for a dark instrument on the table beside it. Her pale hand grips it tightly, a slight snarl playing across her face, as she raises it, at-
“Ugh. They’ve played this one five times this week.” She complains, as she presses the button on the remote. The television set clicks off, leaving her to her thoughts, as her room grew quiet.
Lori leaned close to her mirror, tracing a dark line along her lashes. She was quite happy with her costume this year. In truth, the only reason she’d wanted to be a witch this year was to test-run her desire for dressing like a goth full time - but that wasn’t something she was about to tell her parents; especially her father. Not yet, at least.
Looking at her reflection, she pursed her lips into a goofy face, in a lame attempt at raising her own mood. But the smile fell just as quick as it had began, as she glared at herself.
Normally, this was her favorite time of the year, but after a little… incident with her two brothers the year prior, she found herself unable to wipe the lingering anger from her mood.
He didn’t even have to close her eyes to recall, her aggravation was so fresh in her mind.
It had been one of those cheap Halloween stores that spring up in abandoned strip malls every October. The kind that reek of cheap plastic and artificial fog.
Lori Marble had been thirteen - just reaching the age where she had begun to notice that the costumes they sold for girls her age began to have less… fabric to them.
Her brothers, fifteen year old Eric and thirteen year old Finn, were roaming the aisles like a pair of feral cats, already snickering before they even joined her in the women’s section.
“Sorry Eric, the girl’s section doesn’t have tights big enough to fit YOUR butt.” Lori chided, sticking her tongue out at the older boy. Why were they even following her here anyways? Don’t they have their own costumes to pick out?
Eric largely ignores his sister, just making a clicking noise with his tongue, before something apparently catches his interest.
“DUDE,” Eric said, holding up a tiny sequined top for his younger brother to see, “check this out—‘Sexy Corn.’ Who buys this stuff?”
“Guess you’ve gotta freeze to death to be a girl on Halloween,” Finn replies with a giggle.
“You’d never catch a guy dead in one of these,” Eric nods. “Imagine me showing up as Slutty Dracula.”
“Woah…” Finn says in a small voice, his pointer finger tapping his bottom lip as his head whips around, looking for their parents. “Mom says you shouldn’t use-”
“To talk about WOMEN.” Eric completes the thought for him with a frown. “But I’m not saying women are sluts! I’m saying-” he holds up another costume that he snatches from the wall. “Sexy Pirate,” he reads. “Do you think it’s your AVERAGE woman going as a sexy pirate on Halloween? Or is it the sluts?”
“A slut….” Finn replies uneasily, but the smirk only grows on his face.
They pick up costume after costume, their laughter spilling across the racks. Lori kept flipping through the hangers, pretending she didn’t hear them, pretending her face wasn’t hot. “You know mom woul kill you guys if she heard you saying that!” She shouts to the boys, but gets only more giggling in reply.
“But hey, not that I’m complaining if girls want to dress like this around me. Candy, eye candy…. Both are fun to get on Halloween!”
Both younger siblings turn to look at the older boy in surprise, as he shrugs in that stereotypical mannish ‘What? I’m right.’ way.
“You’re both disgusting.” Lori declares, walking away with a deep scowl on her face, her head shaking. “And one of these days, you’re really going to regret being such pigs!”
“Ohhh sorry Lori, I would! But I think they’re out of the sexy pig costumes!” Eric belts out, as both boys descend into hysterical laughter.

Back in her room, Lori capped her eyeliner and stared at herself. The little jack-o’-lantern night-light on her wall flickers, its grin seeming to stretch to match Lori’s own.
But maybe, she thought to herself with a cheshire cat smile, if girls weren’t such sluts, she could have devised some sort of revenge. The kind of irony rich plan that would have been the plot of a Greek play. Not that a girl’s tiny bimbo mind could ever understand such a thing.
Placing her closed makeup on the counter and giving her reflection one last look, she makes for her door, glancing at her phone screen with a smile, as she reads her most recent text from Sandra.
“Yup! Just dropped them off at mom’s house!!1” it read. Sandra was a good friend, and the bravest person Lori had ever met.
Sandra’s parents weren’t really her parents. At least, not after she turned twelve. That’s when she learned the truth: the sister she had grown up with was actually her mother. Her mother had been too young to raise her at first, so she passed the role off as a sister until she got her life in order.
Most kids our age would have crumbled, but Sandra didn’t. She adjusted and somehow kept herself from falling apart. Her mother was 30 or so, if Lori remembered correctly, and while she was a great mother, she was also juuuust young enough to humor the girls’ antics, and let a lot of things slip.
….. Which is why, is took a shockingly minimal amount of convincing to get her to go along with the girls’ evil plans for the Marble boys.
The pair of them had only gotten home from their respective sports teams not long ago, and were currently occupying both bathrooms, showering off a few layers of grime before the kids all went out trick-or-treating.
What the boys didn’t know, is that the dirty clothes that they’d thrown in the hamper before they’d showered (as their mother always demanded) - along with the rest of their clothes had already been snagged, and was all currently…..
Lori checked her the map app on her phone, to satisfy her curiosity. 3.4 miles away at Sandra’s house.
The girls had used their weekly allowance, and the generous 50% refund, to replace the boy’s costumes with… well, something more to Lori’s liking. Some costumes they'd gotten from an adult website Sandra’s mother found for them once they’d gotten her onboard with the idea of helping Lori punish her jerky brothers. Neither of the girls had known that sexy Halloween costumes for BOYS even existed!
She looks over at the costumes with an evil smirk as she approaches the door of the upstairs bathroom, hooking the handle of the little plastic bag on the knob. ‘Slutty Vampire’ the bag declared in bold, blood dripping letters. Lori stifled a giggle, and knocked gently on the door.
“I’ll be out in a second.” He replied. “It’s unlocked, just put it on the counter.”
She feels the beginning of a frown forming at his boldness. How is he going to turn me doing him a favor into asking MORE from me? She thinks, but the aggravation is quickly dashed by thoughts of how funny it will be once her plan is in motion.
Lori opens the door, and the warm, humid air from the bathroom greets her. The shower curtain was thick enough that she couldn’t really see him, but she could see the silhouette. And she could tell he had his back to the door, so she felt comfortable letting herself in.
She did her best to keep her giggling to herself as she places the plastic on the counter by the sink, and quickly makes her way out.
She glances down the hallway. The second bathroom door was cracked, and the light from within illuminated the hallway slightly, though it sounded as though he was no longer showering.
She made her way over, knocking twice, and is met with the startled sound of something dropping.
“D-don’t come in! I’m naked!” Finn’s voice cracks out, as the door quickly slams shut.
Lori rolls her eyes. Why would she even bother peeking when she was bound to see everything anyways. As long as things went off with a hitch, at least.
"I'm just letting you know that I have your costume for you, it's on the door." She chimes in a sweet voice, as the hangs the bag on the knob. 'Slutty Pirate,' she reads with a snort. Would they even be able to remember that far back to really enjoy the irony? Probably not.
“O-oh… okay.” The young boy says, relaxing. “Thank you.”
She turns on her heel, and practically skips into the living room, looking out the window for Sandra’s car to pull in. She was perfectly willing to kick things into gear if the boys noticed their costume BEFORE Sandra and her mother got here, but it would certainly be a lot easier if they were.
Any moment now, she thought with a crocodile’s smile. Any moment now they’ll notice their new and improved costumes, and they’ll have no choice but to wear them. Then they’d understand, and maybe even learn something too!
Not that them learning a lesson from all of this was even the point anyways. After all, candy, eye candy…. Both are fun to get on Halloween!
...Right?

Hey guys!
So, I think the best way for me to get back into the groove of things with my main story, is to take my mind off of it for a bit, but to still write! So, why not write a cheesy, low-stakes Halloween story, to get into the spirit?
Because this is a Halloween story, I'm more partial to things having a bit more of a suspension of disbelief, though as always, I remain a stickler for having at least a *thread* of it all making sense.
Anyways, let me know what you think! Thoughts, feedback etc is always encouraged. Heck, maybe you could influence the story.
Bonus question, how do you envision the Slutty Vampire and Slutty Pirate costumes the boys are doomed to don? I have my own ideas of course, but I'd love to hear about how all of you picture them in your head!
