Day 6: The Young Feminist

Oliver was eating his lunch in the corner of the schoolyard, away from everyone else. Today his mom had made him wear a pink, feminine sundress, but he was sick of spending every lunchtime hiding in the bathroom stall. He just needed some fresh air.

Suddenly two of the biggest bullies in his grade walked up to him.

Oliver winced.

Meanwhile, 10-year-old Lucy was sitting in the school library. She spent most lunchtimes there reading female authors. She was a self-described feminist and didn't have many friends at the mostly conservative school.

Her reading was interrupted by wailing from outside. She ran to the window to see Oliver being punched repeatedly by the two bullies.

She ran outside and stormed up to the group of boys. "What are you doing? Leave that person alone!"

"The weirdo deserves it!"

"They are not a weirdo and they do not! Just leave or I'll go get the principal."

One of the bullies pushed Oliver to the ground. "You're dead later, loser."

The two walked away as Lucy knelt down next to Oliver. "Are you okay?"

"I'm not sure. I think so." He looked at his arm. There was blood from when he fell over.

"Let me take you to the nurse's office."

"No, it's fine. It's just a scrape. Just let me finish my lunch."

The girl thought for a few seconds. "Okay. Can I sit with you at least? You seem like you could use a friend."

Oliver was cautious, but nodded. He wasn't used to people being nice to him recently. He returned to eating his lunch, as Lucy sat next to him.

"So... What do you identify as?" Lucy asked.

"What?"

"Like, boy, girl, or nonbinary? Or what? If you don't mind me asking."

"Oh. I'm a boy..." Oliver was confused.

"Oh that's cool! I love how you're open to feminine fashion and don't care about stupid gender roles."

Oliver nodded but had no idea what she was talking about. He decided to go along with it if it meant she would be his friend. And she was cute, he thought.

The two chatted for the entire lunch break. Suddenly the bell rang for class to start again.

"What grade are you in, anyway?" Lucy asked.

"Oh... 5th grade. Ms Sutton's class."

"She's so nice! I'm in 4th, Mr Johnson. He's such a grouch. Want to walk back to our classes together?"

Oliver almost said yes, but realized that would mean walking through the busy hall. He had made it a habit to walk to class late, when the halls were empty.

"That's okay. I'll wait here for a while longer. But you go ahead!"

Lucy frowned. "Oh. Okay. Well, I'll see you Monday? We can have lunch together then."

"Yes please!"
