In my world the "family jewels" were very specifically the testicles. After all, they were in a pouch to protect them and you need them to have a family which made them very precious!

I don't know that I'd use "cringe" but I do know whenever someone made reference to my 'family jewels' it used to make me feel funny "down there", I guess because of the way it implied there was something of great value in my briefs I needed to keep safe.

Yes, and that was a more-or-less accurate description until perhaps age 12-13. After I began taking showers alone around age 9, that appellation sort of faded away or became less used.
